my symptoms have been getting worse and worse, for about the past two months. I can't even leave the house, wake up at least 7 times a night to run to the bathroom, and 20 times a day. on oral and rectal steroids, 5-asa and just started Imuran (7 days ago) but not too sure when I need to go to the ER. I talked to my GI on wednesday and he said give it more time and call him back. I'm anemic again. not too sure how bad by now. I've been loosing a lot of blood. would a blood transfusion help at this point?

I would said screw what your GI says and get to the ER with symptoms like that. My 2 cents.

I don't know if you need a transfusion but your symptoms do warrant a hospital stay. Go to the ER and chances are they will admit you.

What dose of prednisone are you on and for how long?

     GEt to the ER pronto.  Two years ago my GI doctor questioned why I went to the ER 2 am on a Sunday morning.  Too bad he was on call...guess the ER doctor woke him up or something.  Tough...if he didn't like it he shouldn't be in that profession.  Anyway, I told him I went to the ER because I had severe diarrhea, bleeding, cramps and blood pressure of 216/110...now if that weren't enough symptoms to send me to the ER ..what the heck is?  Since then we smoothed things over but not until I really gave him a piece of my mind.  He IS a good doctor but he thinks very highly of himself.  He was reluctant to finally admit that I have surgery too and I think he still has a problem with my decision.  I phoned in a renewal for my Balasalizide (generic for Colazal) yesterday and the pharmacy told me they are still waiting for him to call back.  I have enough for a few more days but if he is holding this against me...shame on him.  The surgeon wants me to continue with this med too but it is under my GI's name on the Rx.  He wants to see me a month post surgery but he can stick it if that is how he is going to be.....there are other GI's around.

Give what more time? As I understand it, Imuran takes several weeks to kick in. And the steroids, if they were going to help, should've helped quickly - at least, that's the typical case as far as I know (it wasn't the case for me - but then, I ended up in the hospital for weeks).

With your frequency, losing blood, and the meds not helping, I agree with sue and Krissy; you should head over to the ER. If nothing else, you probably need some IV fluids, and the blood tests they'll most assuredly do while you're there will give you some good measure.

Sounds like you're not doing so well. I really feel bad for you because I know how difficult it is when you can't get any sleep... I think you are definitely on the virge of a hospital trip. I'm sorry to say it but you're just going to wear yourself down even more if you continue to wait.
