When judge was combing the room for excuses, I said I had UC. She said 'what is that' I told her it means I often have to go to the restroom frequently. She said, no problem, just raise your hand during jury duty. Next...
Any of you had any issues with serving on a jury?

I got a letter in the mail a few months ago, called the nurse at the GI, and she said absolutley no problem us giving you a jury duty letter, call anytime you need one. I ended up not even having to go to the courthouse at all after phoning in the next week, but feel like they couldn't have denied the note had I gone.

If you are flaring then it would be almost impossible to sit still during a trial. So get a note from your GI because the courts will not recognize any medical condition that isn't verified by a professional.

I just asked my Doc for a note and that was that! Also she mentioned in the note, that beside the UC/Crohn's, she felt it unsafe for me to be in a small room with so many people, as I'm on a number of immuno suppressants.

I think it would be very easy to get removed from the jury pool with UC.Then you wouldn't get called in at all. Due the unpredictable nature of the disease and how really disruptive and miserable it can make your day..might be a good idea to opt out of jury duty. Not sure if you could opt out of serious long trials because of a medical condition if you wanted to serve. The do use alternate jurors so I suppose you could bow out for medical reasons.

I forgot to mention that I'm now exempt from all future jury duties as I'm also permanently disabled thanks to the complications of this crazy illness...

When I get a form from the city calling me for JD, there's a space for "reasons unable to serve." Active ulcerative colitis (sadly) has always been an honest reason that kept me from worrying about
having to run out in the middle of a trial!
