eating and urgency

  quick question,

what is it that after eating you have urgency? is it part of UC?

usually after lots of food or hot drinks its time to visit the mens room.

 Pretty annoying at the minute

It's peristalisis, the movement of the smooth muscles of the GI tract after eating.

Thing is with having an IBD, weather you're eating, have just eaten or not, the nature of the disease is frequency of bowel movements, so actually it may (and likely isn't) necessarily the actual act of eating/drinking that brings the urge(s) on, the urges are the symptom of having an IBD and since whatever you eat today will generally be completely out of you in about 3 days from now (varies for each person) that's why even if you didn't eat anything for 2 days (for example) you'd still be pooping at random times (not just when you've been eating or ate something).

When my children were babies I remember reading about the gastro-colic reflex (bringing on the peristalsis Suebear mentioned) - when you feed a baby, pretty quickly you need to change its diaper.
With us, as I understand, this thing happens, because our GI systems are kind of over-active - non-UCers don't always have this issue as adults.
For that matter, then I'm not flaring, I don't, either.....

My first GI told me his grandmother's remedy for constipation was to drink something hot - so, yeah, it does activate the system!

In the first UC book I read, some 14 years ago, they gave the hint to sit still after a meal and try to be relaxed and maybe one could bypass that happening.

I've had two babies, and basically, when they're newborns, yes they do often "go" even while still eating but the older they get the less that happens, a babies system isn't anything like an adults system...bottom line still is, it's the nature of the disease. Everytime I drink something hot it doesn't cause a reaction to have to release my bowels either. I know lots of elderly ppl will even sip on warm/hot water, that helps them to not get constipated (according to some of the ones I know personally) but it certainly doesn't cause them to have a bowel movement instantly either.

One wouldn't need to go unless there's stool in the lower colon...so, unless you're flaring, it's probably your normal time to go.

Heavy foods and coffe could trigger the "download".

I would like to say I have learned the "amount" I can eat at once or in one day to not cause this urgency when out in public or someone's house.  Eating more often - small amounts during the day helps a lot for me.  If out in restaurant, I have learned when to stop and take the rest home or throw away if necessary.  I also order smaller meals - portions - or share with my hubby!

What is it with you and cheeseburgers??  I have no problem with an occasional cheeseburger - maybe once a week.  BUT - don't give me a banana.  You know we are all different and wonderful you have found the answers for you!  GREAT!
