Anyone taking Bentyl have comments on it? 

My doc gave me an Rx for Dicyclomine (a generic) and between all the other crap I'm taking and the side effects listed for this drug, I don't know if its worth it.

It worked to minimize my flareups for a short period of time when prescribed by a DO. I think it is more commonly prescribed for IBS, but it certainly helped calm my lower GI tract down.

At the same time it made me feel kind of loopy and was very strong. I'd be careful mixing that with Vicodin.

what dosage did the doc give you?

I've used it for 21 years, needless to say...it's on my list of suggestions.

I used 10mg initially for about 15 years, then upped it to 20.

It relaxes my vision somewhat..and can mellow me out a bit if I'm just vegging.

Thanks for the replies.  My Rx is for 10 mg.  I discovered this morning that taking OTC ibuprofen had the same effect as Vicodin, so I may be done with those. 

It blows my mind though how many drugs I am on.  Sometimes I wonder if I'm more screwed up from the disease or the drugs.

Ibuprophen is a no-no, according to my doc. I do take aspirin with his OK, but he made me promise to not take ibuprophen.

Regarding same effect as Vicodin...what do you meahn...constipation? If so, that's a symptom of low in the rectum inflammation or mild rectal inflammation.

Have you not been on Rowasa yet?

How much fish oil and flax oil are you taking?

Just FYI, you may want to be careful w/ taking Ibuprofin. I def. believe that taking it contributed to my initial flare up. I also know alot of UCers can't take it w/out causing a problem. (You may not be one of them, but just to be aware) Good luck!

I agree that Ibuprofen is usually a cause of flareups. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is also an active ingredient in Vicodin. If you cut out the Vicodin and want to replace it with a weaker painkiller, Tylenol can do the trick and is never linked to IBD.

Ibuprofen put me into a horrible bloody flare once. Apparently it can even cause UC-type symptoms in non-UC folks. I avoid all NSAIDS.

I take ibuprofen on occassion, but not during flares. I've never had a problem. Tylenol quit working and I needed something for my arthritis.
I'd also be careful mixing Bentyl and Vicodin. They both make me sleepy. Bentyl does help me with cramps. But I like keeping things to a minimum so I've only used it twice.

My first GI doc told me to stop taking ibuprofen and I did, but I never knew why. Now that I know, I won't take it again. No need to make flares worse than they already are.

As for results being the same with ibuprofen and vicodin, I meant that both ease pain and reduce the fever. Tylenol just doesn't seem to do much for me. I have not been on Rowasa. I take 2400 mg fish oil and 2000 mg flax oil daily. Don't know if it helps, but I've been taking it for years and I figure it can't hurt.

The fish and flax oil will definitely make your urgency worse. and for some it can hurt, not in a destructive way unless one has bleeding issues.

I would strongly suggest you use the Rowasa if it helped you in the past.

Regarding pain...depends on what pain and why...you may be able to find other options, but totally nix the ibuprophen.

Thanks. I read somewhere that fish & flax oil was good for UC, so I kept taking it. Sigh. What about ground flaxseed?

I've never been on Rowasa.

I don't use flaxseed or fishoil...just because it's said to be good doesn't mean it agrees with you.

Oh, sorry..misread the Rowasa comment. Rowasa is mesalamine in enema form...good for your butt if you respond well to 5ASA.

The Canasa isn't enough for treatment of UC rectal symptoms from my perspective. Used as maintenance or in conjunction with the enemas, yes.

Ask the doc for Rowasa.....I strongly suggest it.

I tried bentyl and felt worse and exhausted. A number of months later I figured I would give it a try again and the same type of feeling happened so I gave up on it. Just my experience, I know alot of people have had success with it.
