Do many have family members with UC too?

Wondering if UC is genetic. The only reason I ask is that I was diagnosed at 28 long after my younger sister was diagnosed at 19 (vegetarian) and she ended up needing her colon removed (pouch created with ileo-anal connection). However, the females in our family all seem to have auto-immune issues (endometriosis, fibromyalgia, RA, Hashimoto's thyroid disease, allergies, excema, asthma)...

If you have family members with UC too, what relation to you? Sibling, child, parent, etc? Just curious. Other auto-immune diseases too?

No one in my family with UC but my mom does have fibro. Which made me wonder a little. Maybe they should look at auto-immune disease in general as being genetic and not just at UC/IBD specifically. She had endometriosis too but I didn't think that was auto-immune (in fact, she was pregnant with me when she had it, they told her she couldn't have kids XD )? I dunno though. I also have asthma but my brother smoked around me all the time when I was a kid. Still does rolleyes I don't think that's auto-immune either. Maybe some types are though. Not mine.

My mother had Crohn's and she died 30 years ago from complications. My Great Grandmother had some sort of intestinal issues but my Gma thought it might've been either Uc or CD. But other then that, no other member of my family has any auto immune issues. My brothers are healthy and my father has been healthy most of his life (except now he has heart issues).

No relatives w/ UC here...however have thryoid auto-immune in the family as well as some diabetes.

My grandmother was diagnosed with UC very late in her life however she had GI issues since she was in her 30's...she had always called it a sensitive stomach but we are sure she had UC the whole time. Other autoimmune diseases are very prevalant in my family.

My Dad has UC, when he was dealing with it and in an out of the hospital, I was showing signs of it but it never completely surfaced until 15 years later.

Yes my one older sister has colitis but seems to have it controlled well, but she smokes and has other strange auto immune type issues affecting her on and off. My mom has IBS, I think RA as well. Her dad my grandfather died from colon cancer. So it does run on one side of my family a bit.

No one in my family has UC (that I know of ) confused . I haven't told my parents that I have it either, I don't want to worry them. Very few people know, its my secret rolleyes .

My daughter has UC (age 5 onset).  I have reynaudes.  My sister has scleraderma, gerd and reynaudes, nephew - alopecia, aunt - MS, father, grandfather and grandmother all had skin issues that were autoimmune.  The whole family has IBS/stomach problems.

No one in my family has UC or Crohn's and I was diagnosed at the age of 40. The only thing that runs in my family is heart disease on my dad's side, but even there, most problems don't start until after the age of 70.

I think my mom had it...but she was a smoker.

No one else that I know of, but could be someone if I made the effort to enquire (OK, if I cared to enquire).

My mom HAD UC. Fortunately, after one course of pred and 2 years of sulfasalazine (oral) the symptoms disappeared and she is free of symptoms and medications for last 12 years.

Other than that no one in my immediate family has any auto immune disease.

My grandad and 2 of my aunts (on my mom's side) have 'colitis' as they like to call it.  They insist UC is different but I think they are in denial...lol.

My dad had pyroderma gangrenosum and MS...geez, lovely genetics I have to deal with, but somehow my Mom and brother have nothing...go figure rolleyes

My dad has UC.  My mom probably has Celiac disease, I have 2 or 3 cousins with Celiac, and I believe I have 4 aunts with varied autoimmune issues.  Until this year I have always considered myself to be super healthy and now it turns out I have UC too.

Yes it runs in my family. Two of my cousins and an uncle have UC. Also a cousin has fibromyalgia and an aunt with chrons. I'm constantly worried my children may get it.

No one else in my family has UC or Chrons or any other autoimmune issues. I was just diagnosed last fall with UC at the age of 26, but looking back I had some slight symptoms for at least a year or so before that. I just thought I had a sensitive stomach.

No one had UC or Crohn's on my mom's side. My dad's side I don't know so it could come from there. I have thyroid issues and my grandma does too. My cousin was just diagnosed with RA. Waiting to see if my son has crohn's.

My mom has Fibro. My brother is always complaining about stomach problems and also he sometimes talks about issues which seem to be Fibro, but he has never been to the doctor to get it checked (he doesn't want to cause he is going into the Marines and he doesn't want to be discharged).
My father has Cronhs and my cousin possibly has Fibro.
And I may have Lupus, still have to go to the doctor for them to run a test, but it doesn't seem to bother me. Just have spots on my shoulders/collar bone area, and now some on my neck.

Yes, sister and I do believe it is pretty certain that there is a genetic component.

However one must also consider that family members are often eating the same food and has the same environmental factors around them.

I had the same question on another thread. No one diagnosed in my family with UC..but there were digestive issues..so it could have been misdiagnosed or I got a combo of the bad genes! My mother had her gaul bladder removed. Her mother has a "senstive stomache" but was never diagnosed with anything. My mom's father was sensitive to acidic foods. Just found out that my mom's mother's half-sister had colon cancer and had her colon removed. Never met the half sister, she may hv passed away before I was born in 1969.

Not sure when UC was established in the medical dictionaries...so it may not have been a term "back then". I would ask about your "unrecorded" family medical conditions that are digestive related.

No one else in my family has UC but there are a lot of autoimmune diseases, aunt has fibro, my brother and grandmother have thyroid issues, my mom and I have severe allergies, my mom also has diverticulitis and sometimes I swear she has UC...

No one in my family that i know of has UC or similar but we have auto immune problems and HLA-B27 gene issues
