Painful abdominal cramping - what do you take

I assume I must be going into a flare but I've never had such intesnse abdominal cramping like this before.  I know it's a symptom of UC though - what do you take to revlieve the pain?  It's coming and going in waves.  I'll start some prednisone once I get home tonight, but is there something I can take OTC to relieve the cramping?

Have you tried Bentyl? It relieves colon spasms if thats what you mean. It's an Rx but v. inexpensive. Works pretty fast too.

Try ice. Really, not heat, but ice.

I have actually been taking vicodin...not over the counter but was given the script last time i was hospitalized. I have had abdominal cramping before but nothing like this flare. The urgency, blood, and diarrhea is gone but when i actually have a bowel movement which is 1-2 times a day it is unbearable.

My doctor also has me on Vicodin. Because of how severe my pancolitis is, NSAIDS are NOT an option because I have serious bleeding issues. Every day seems to be different so I have a few different scripts at my disposal. Mild days range from Tylenol with Codeine to Darvocet and moderate to severe days is Vicodin. He's more than ready to write a script for Perkicet (however you spell it) if needed but Vicodin has been taking the edge off pretty well so far. I heard about Bentyl and have been very curious about talking to my GI about it and how it works however I do have a friend who is on it and it's something that affects everyone differently. For her, she has to take it when she's home because if she's at work, it knocks her for a loop but IT WORKS. Hope this helps!! Just be cautious with anything over the counter because NSAIDS will aggrivate UC.

I had asked my doctor about bentyl and he wasn't a big fan of it. So for right now just sticking with the vicodin as needed and seeing the surgeon to set a date on monday!

Interesting...my doc would never give me vicodin for pain,,,not that I need it.

I don't your doctor.

I've never had anything that has gotten rid of stomach cramping. My doctor has always just hoped a dosage increase or a switch of meds would help in stopping the flare. I've always just had to suck it up.
I've been given medication for nausea, but never, specifically for the intense cramping.
My guess is, a flare is coming your way.

If your GI won't prescribe Bentyl, dump them! They must be a sadist as everyone I've talked to (including me), can only get relief with Bentyl. For me it almost stops a morning flare in a flash.

Bentyl won't stop a flare. Spasming...it will help.

I don't see that much of a reason for dropping my GI, since he is one of three Pediatric GI's in my city, and all three are in the same practice and no adult doc's will take me.
Kinda crazy just for Bentyl.

Since I've already had three flares without Bentyl, I think it is more of a luxury. If it is there, GREAT, if not, okay, just suck it up like the last times.
