I am currently experiencing a flare with severe abdominal pain, has anyone ever taken pain medication for there pain during a flare and if so what medication and did it help? Thanks I was diagnosed with UC June 2009, hospitalized with Pancolitis September 2010 remission till last week. Was just put on 40 mg of pred on monday and have a colonoscopy next Friday.

I only use dicyclomine (Bentylol) and Tylenol.


When you go for your scope, ask the doc for 5ASA medication...both oral and rectal.

Have these not been an option for you...only pred?

Whats 5asa? I was on Lialda which i guess kept me in remission since I was hospitalized in October with pred which I tapered off, was down to 2 pills of Lialda until last week than all of a sudden a flare came on, of course when I was going away for the weekend, the flare was as bad as I felt when I was hospitalized and It came full strength right away so my GI put me on Pred cause If he didnt I would of gone to the hospital. I just want to know if any type pf pain med works for the abdominal pain. I used to use the rectal med mesalimine but when it gets bad I cant hold it in

5ASA is the mainline meds we use such as Asacol, Lialda, Colazal, Pentasa etc.

When my abdominal pain was bad, my GI gave me Darvocet. It worked great but it can cause constipation. If you don't want to go the narcotic route, you can try Tylonel Arthritis (it has a higher MG count) and warm water bottle or heating pad on your gut.

Tylenol 3's seem to do the trick for me while I was having my abdominal pain. I needed a little more than that while having my initial flare at the hospital but for now those seem to do the trick for me. Goodluck.
