Anyone have high blood platelets?

I get a call from my rhume after my bloods taken yesturday. He says my platelets are high (600) and have been for a very long time!!! Now he tells me, now I'm pregnant every bad news there is, is coming out the woodworks!!
They have been negligent & changing me from doctor due to their staff issues & havnt monitored properly! Now I'm pregnant there's a sense of urgency!
My days seem to be getting worse. He says in pregnancy it's a worry as it can cause clots. He going to speak to haematologist & get bk to me. May have to take aspirin to thin the blood!
Has anyone had this? Is it dangerous? What treatment did you receive?

This is my first time posting but I have been reading this board for awhile now.  I just had to comment on your post because this happened to me.

I have had high platelets for years but during my last pregnancy, my count was OVER 1 MILLION!!  I of course had to see a high risk pregnancy OB and I took a baby aspirin daily.  My pregnancy went smoothly considering I was flaring the whole time.  I got off the aspirin after my son's birth since aspirin isnt good to take with UC...however, the risk of NOT taking it was worse than the risk to my UC..know what I mean?

After years of having the high platelets, I am proud to say that I am no longer anemic and my platlett count in now normal.  My hematologist gave me iron infusions and this lowered my platelets and raised my iron levels.

Hope that the hematologist can help you.  You can't have the infusions during pregnancy but see if can be an option for you after delivery.  Good luck!

Thank you SO much for your reply!! I serious thought I was the only one with UC & high platelets!! Mine are at the 650 Mark which is high & have been for years & iv nt bn told! I have been told I'm anemic a few times bt the iron tablets irritated my tum alot so to avoid a flare I never took them. I never knew this was related to a rise in platelets & would have definitely made sure my iron stores were normal before conceiving if I did.
In the UK they have told I need to take heparin, a blood thinning injection. With my bones already thin I'm at very high risk of osteoporosis ESP if I start taking them now that would be 8 months worth of medication plus I think you have to take it a little after pregnancy too.
I'm in such a state, my bones which I need to be active & to look after baby when here. Or take meds & jus deal with fractures & frail bones for the rest of my life. Meaning this would be my only pregnancy.
I am kicking myself for not asking for print outs of tests & keeping an eye on things myself!
I can't turn back time, today I see a high risk OB to discuss these issues. That way I can make an informed decision. I'm worried about the asprin & it bringing on a flare did this happen with you? But I'd much rather the aspirin then injections.
Thank you again for reply. I hope too that iron is the answer to lowering my platelets & there's a solution to all of this.

Momto3miracles; thought id give you feedback on my situation since you were so kind to share your experience.

I went to see a high risk OB today who spoke to a heamotologist. They said that they will put me on aspirin at some point but not yet. He said because im young, not overwieght with no history of dvt, that he isnt going to give me anything as its so early on in the pregnancy!

Pray for me, i hope things start looking up from here as the past week has been a nightmare with all the mixed horror stories iand news i've been told.

Sounds like your doctors are on top of the situation...just keep an eye out for painful, red lumps on your legs..I was told that this could be a sign of DVT...especially at the back of your legs.

I have been blessed with 3 wonderful sons while having this horrible disease.  My doctors actually told me to abort my 3rd son because I was so sick..but I don't believe in that.  It was hard, I wont lie, but I wouldn't trade it for the world.  The aspirin never effected my UC so hopefully it will be ok for you.  My doctor described it to me this way...if your low in red blood cells, your bone marrow is trying to produce more, hence the rise in plateletts....get iron infusions to raise the red blood cells (iron stores) and the bone marrow wont have to work so hard and make so many plateletts.  Kind of confusing but it worked for me.

I will definately pray for you and your little one!  Congrats on the pregnancy.  Please keep me updated! :-)

Had my first scan at 8 weeks a few days ago to check everything was ok, and i saw my little bean for the first time. Heartbeat was established and hopefully things will run a little smoother after such a rocky start!
Saw my OB today my platelets are 739! Was hoping they would drop but they havent :( wishfull thinking! Was prescribed the aspirin 75mg so start that tomorrow. Hopefully i wont experience problems with my UC.
Wanted to ask you were you put on iron supplements while pregnant? How did this affect your colitis?
Also i have osteopenia from the horrible steroids! Now pregnant i want to keep on top of my calcium intake. Ive been prescribed adcal d3 but they honestly make me heave!!!!!!!!! I hate them, i manage one a day but the past 4 days ive been so nauseus i cant stomach them at all. Did you take anything else or did you rely on just your diet?

First of all....CONGRATS on the great scan!!!  The first one is always the most nerve wracking...but once you see that little heart beating away....

To answer your questions, I tried to take iron suppliments but my stomach would not tolerate them.  I tried both the pills and the liquid but both gave me really bad diarreah.  So I tried to add as much iron to my diet as possible.  I was still anemic but the baby will take what he/she needs and whatever is left, goes to you =)

As for the calcium, i just took my multi vitamin and drank tons of lactose free milk (Lactaid)

Please keep me posted on how you are doing.
