Hard Stools From Meds

Looking for some help. 

My daughter has hard stools (caused by the meds) that cause cuts on her bottom, that bleed.  I can see the cuts and it's only on the paper NOT on the poop.  I've been giving her Miralax and it does help keep the stool soft, but it's one more medication that I would prefer she not have to take.  When I use the Miralax no problems with cuts and no blood.  It does take a long time to heal. 

If we miss a day or it's not the correct amount - bam hard stool and blood.  If I give her to much she gets liquid (not mucus and has no odor) that just comes out.  How can I heal the cuts so they don't keep coming back.  I'm talking weeks with nothing and then a somewhat hard stool and the cut is back.

With this being caused by the meds I can not get her to eat enough food to soften the stool.   Anyone have this problem?  Help, I'm driving her crazy!  She is so tired of me looking at her poop!

Applying Analpram hydrocortisone cream shrinks hemmorroids and helps with the cuts.

Have her use a low dose of colace to softnen her stool...this works well for me with 0 side effects as colace just draws moisture into the stool; make sure she's staying well hydrated. Hope she feels better soon.

Could she not eat some prunes or drink some extra juice? If that doesn't work, is it possible that her meds could be reduced in dosage?

I second the Colace stool softener and A LOT of water or liquids.

Agreed, either give her colace or add more soluble fiber to her diet. The cuts you are seeing are called fissures. Your GI can prescribe an RX cream for that will give her relief.

Psyllium Seed Powder makes the stools formed, but not hard. Don't want to be too graphic, but the seed powder makes the stool sort of slippery and easy to pass because of the seed powder holds water. I think it would be worth a try and should not cause gas or other issues like the husk powder could.

she needs to also be on rectal meds...part of the reason she's having harder stools is rectal inflammation, even if it's very very mild.

The stool softener is a good idea.

Thank you.  We are seeing the GI next week and I will talk with him about an RX.  You guys are the best.
