Inflammation can make the colon reluctant/incapable of moving things along. C is my major lookout now and it takes vigilance and attention to diet. Fiber can both help and hurt. I try not to overdo insoluble fiber and yes drinking water throughout the day is very important. Half a gallon minimum and maybe more if you're very active.
I found it necessary to take Citrucel tablets (advice of a nurse friend), started with 6/day and am now down to 1.5/day after 5 months.
I also take a spoonful of fish oil and a spoonful of coconut oil in the AM which jump starts the process. I've found if it doesn't happen in the morning it just won't happen later and that bloated feeling makes for a lousy day.
My last suggestion is to use mesalamine enema at bedtime. Doesn't sound like it would help but it does.
Good luck.
P.S. Also eat 2 prunes a day, just like gramma said. It helps.
