overdose on lialda

I had a flare up of mu U.C. and wen to see my doctor. He told me to increase my dose from 2 pills to 7 to control the flare up. I did so for about a week. My flare up seemed to not get any better so I called him and he put me on a suppository in addition to my 7 pills of lialda. The drug was called Canasa andI was to take one a day before bed. I took this for three days and started getting severe pain in my gut and abdominal area. I called him but got his partner which said he would never put a patient on more than 4 pills of lialda and I shouldgo to the ER! I went to the ER and they said I had developed pancreatitis and it was most likely caused from over dosing on the lialda and canasa combo! I was in the hospital for 6 days and just got out. has anyone ever been on 7 pills or have any input on this situation. thanks Dan

I would do what you are doing and warn people. However, doctors are human, and the medicines for UC come with risks. Pancreatitis is a known side effect of 5-aminosalicyclic acid (5-ASA).
