If you have had to go to the hospital, what was the final straw that sent you there?

Dehydration and substantial blood loss. I don't experience much pain.

Was the combination of the pain, blood loss and frequency - which contributes to dehydration.  Combined with the fact I had been prescribed several meds weeks prior and no relief.  Had tried the Lialda, prednisone and mesalamine enemas. In addition I felt generally ill.  Not like when you have a cold or flu that comes and goes.  You kind of know.

Despite being in my GIs office weekly, and taking meds, I ended up hospitalized. Don't ever think that even when managing the disease (in my case with 22 UC pills per days and enemas) that a hospital stay is out of the question. In my case hospitalization occurred because of loss of blood; fevers, vomiting, and the inability to get out of bed. BTW- I never had pain with UC---ever.

I went when I experienced severe symptoms for a week without any improvement. My pain was at a 10.5 (on a scale from 0-10).

Mostly blood loss for me-dehydration is definitely a factor too. When i spiral down into a bad flare, it happens fast-within a week or two that I am nearing the need for transfusions, and oral steroids just don't cut it, nor do any of the rectals or 5ASAs.

So I needed IV steroids, fluids and rest. And it pushed along getting the Remicade started, which is what got me out of the flare. (Humira was what got me out of the flare after the first hopitalization)

I never really experience much pain, like subdued ans suebear.

Hoping to stay on top of it better when the time comes that the Remicade fails, but like I said, my flares come on fast and furious. I think I will end up starting an immunosuppressant at some point so that when the remicade is done, maybe that on its own will be enough.

Even when you are doing your best to manage it, some of us need hospitalization. It isn't fun, but it definitely gets the job done, and you do have a chance to rest. Prayers for you that you are feeling better soon.

I had been flaring for 10 months, had a newborn, was exhausted and in excruciating pain. I was up all night pooping every 10 minutes with major tenesmus, bloating, gas. Blood was just oozing out of me.

I went to the ER, and a CT scan showed UC. (had not been formally diagnosed because I couldn't do a colonoscopy while pg). They sent me home with a miralax prep and I was back the next morning to do a colonoscopy. When I woke up, my doctor told me she was admitting me because I was close to needing my colon cut out of me.

IV steroids are awesome and a full liquid diet was nice to rest my colon. I also caught up on sleep from having a newborn...my poor husband had to be mister Mom...muahahahaha!

I went to the ER once with crippling abdominal pain, it was a distended abdomen. They gave me something to help the gas subside, but mostly it had to recover on its own. I remember sitting on the floor in the waiting room, curled up, I was in so much pain but still it was a long wait. That was in the 1980s.

The only time I was admitted to the hospital was when I was severely anemic. I didn't know what was wrong, I was pretty sick back then. I had an appt with my GI, he was Medical Faculty for the big university, and he said I needed to be admitted to the university hospital next door, asap. He had someone walk me over to a shortcut up some stairs, but I was too weak to even climb the stairs. I was going to leave when they tried to put me in a room without a bathroom (it was a great hospital but an old building, bathrooms were down the hall!). My GI got me moved to a huge unused recovery room that had a bathroom that was all mine. I think I was only there for one night, maybe two. It was when they were very judicious about giving blood transfusions, because of HIV and no ability to test blood. They wouldn't even let my mother directly donate a unit for me. So I just suffered through, I can't remember what they gave me in the IV. It was almost 20 years ago.

I have had a lot of pain during flares, but I would fight to avoid going to the ER or being hospitalized. The pain always subsided to just a dull ache once the spasms had passed, and I can feed myself steroids at home. It's always more comfortable to be home with UC, in my view. I would not go to an ER walking.

Rapid weight loss

severe dehydration sent me to the hospital.  I had no saliva left in my mouth and once I got there I couldn't even talk it was awful. 

I too was lucky enough to get to a Dr. quickly. My symptoms were rectal bleeding, cramps and weight loss (which I absolutely didn't need). I guess the weight loss was the main reason. I now look like I'm anorexic. However, I've only been diagnose last week and don't even know how bad it is until next weeks appt.

     Since my total colectomy and perm ileo on June 28th, I had to be hospitalized once for dehydration. 

     When I had UP (ulcerative proctitis was my problem), I was hospitalized twice.  The first time when I was diagnosed in 98...symptoms...bleeding, pain, loss of weight, temperature of 102.  Second hospitalization in 08...same symptoms as in 98 but along with high blood pressure 216/110.
