Hi, my son (12) has been prescribed Asocol for colitis. The problem is that he can't swallow the pills without throwing up. He has to take five in the morning and five at night. Doctor says that liquid is worse and you can't break the pills. Any suggestions on how to get him to swallow them.
Thanks keri

my mom mixed the liquid in with soda or pudding. if that doesn't work, wrap the pills in soft bread and have him swallow them like he's swallowing regular food.

Does he know how to swallow pills?
What causes him to throw up? Could it be areaction to the medication? My daughter was allergic to mesalamines- it gave her terrible diarrhea. 5 pills is alot at one time.
Maybe try applesauce.
Their other mesalamines that you can break
open ( Pentasa) and you could ask about
this.

My 8 yo son was diagnosed with UC last Nov and before he started Asacol (which he cannot tolerate and now takes Sulfasalazine), he was referred to a Psychologist to teach him how to swallow the pill. He learned in 20mins by using different sizes of candies. This referral was automatically done by his GI specialist.

Wow
momofthreeinNS
that is fascinating...I have never heard of a Psychologist teaching a child how to swallow pills
let alone the GI being the one to refer!
Lucky for your child...I wish mine would learn!

There is a product on the market called Pill Glide throat spray. It helps by coating the tongue and throat so the pills go down easier.

Also, I taught my kids how to swallow pills by experimenting with M&M's. I started with the minis and worked up to the full size. My daughter has to take pills for her allergies and she found that if she puts water at the back of her throat (holds it there like gargling), put the pill in and swallow with a small shake of her head, the pills go down easier.

My son (now 17) often feels nauseated for a minute or two after swallowing his pills, but he recently realized that in his case it's not the pills, it's just morning, being upright, that makes him feel icky! I'd posted about
him in the spring, and it's the ol'seasonal allergies back, post-nasal drip going into his tum and making him queasy.
Each morning he's taking 4 Asacol, a vitamin, HCTZ (unrelated kidney stones) Align and two Metamucil capsules - those are so big!....
KAB, does your son have other nausea issues besides the pill taking? Is he flaring currently?

opened and put in apple sauce.

Yes...good call!! as long as it's not chewed upon ingestion, just swallowed. Awesome suggestion.
