Remicade ever going generic???

If I understand what I have read about Remicade, it is a biologic and therefore not subject to the same rules about generic equivalents becoming available once a patent expires. A recent health bill included info about biologics and there is a 12 year period of exclusivity before another company could challenge Remicade. A challenger would have to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that their drug is the molecular equivalent and just as effective as the original ... I don't quite understand it all but I believe that biologics are much more complicated and there is little hope for any price breaks for the foreseeable future ...

No, it won't.
I'm a pharmacist and I can tell you that it won't and pretty much can't go generic. This is because as mentioned above, it is a biologic. Remicade is a monoclonal antibody and is produced through the use of a cell culture. These cell cultures are unique to the medication that is produced - thus there is one parent cell line from which all the Remicade is/was produced. This cell line cannot be reproduced without access to the genetic material present in the original parent line. Even if there is a patent that expires, the manufacturer will never be obligated to provide the competition with cultures, therefore an exact replica (and something that could be approved as an equivalent generic) is virtually impossible.
