I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis 2.5 years ago, and it hasn't really gone into remission at all.  I had a c diff infection in August and was treated on 2 rounds of antibiotics.  Doctor did one stool test to make sure it was gone.  It was negative.  Last week, I caught what I thought was the flu, but thought it was strange that I had a week of fever off and on.  My colitis was acting up really bad and I couldn't make it more than an hour (night or day) without running to the bathroom.  Suffered thru the weekend and called my doc on Monday.  Another stool sample confirmed c-diff again.  My problem is the severe stomach cramps.  They are the worst I have ever experienced.  I haven't slept more than an hour or two at a time in the past week, and half the time I am just doubled over in pain/cramps.  I will now be on Vancomycin 4x/day for 21 days.  I haven't eaten since Saturday, and I feel so dehydrated (dropped 8 pounds in a week).  I'm having a really hard time getting fluids down - feeling so nauceous.  I'm so tired and have no energy.  Lomotil isn't working for me right now.  Dicyclomine hasn't seemed to work, but maybe it's worth a try again.  Any helpful advice for me?  What works for your abdominal cramps?  How do I know when it's time to go to the hospital for IV fluids?  I'm just so miserable right now!!!

acwehse- it may be time for you to admitted to hospital-i went thru same thing last month with almost same symptons. i was in hospital for six days on iv fluids of saline,120mg prdnisone,vanconycin and other stuff.they sent me home with250 mg vancomycin 4x daily and 60 mg prednisone daily- also switched my maintenanc meds from balazide to asacol. i cant believe you are NOT on prednisone!!it has taken me almost a month to get my full strength back.i feel for you cause c diff is very serious. also had bad stomach cramps and started vomiting before finall going to emergency room. good luck and please let us know your latest treatment.

Thanks for your responses. I probably should have gone to the hospital. I even cried to the nurse on Monday and Tuesday when I talked to my Dr.'s office. 2 days on Vancomycin now and starting to feel better. Well, the cramps are much less now anyway. Now, I'm just feeling all the effects of being dehydrated, so physically exhausted. But at least it's going in the right direction now. Even started eating some soup today. I've been off and on Prednisone for 2 years. At my last 2 dr. appts, my GI said he didn't want me on it long term because of the long term side effects. I understand that, but at the same time, it seems to be the only thing that truly makes me feel relief from my colitis! I will also check into the fecal transplant more. Very interesting, especially if it's a long-term fix for UC! Thanks for that info Subdued!! Do you know anyone who has had the fecal transplant??

Yes. Me. The first time with great success. The second time with some success. However, I was able to do only two treatments the second time. I just get so tired of talking about my experience with fecal transplantation over and over again. So here are some links that discuss the subject, including my experience:

I plan to do fecal transplantation again when I get the chance. I think of it as a superman probiotic.
