Hi everyone.

2 days ago I started having nausea, bloating, diarrhea and fatigue. It's a little better today but I still have these symptoms. Is this normal during a flare up? My periods also started becoming irregular and I'm on the pill. I was scared that I might be pregnant but I took 2 preg tests and they came back negative. I have 5 exams next week. I'm so stressed and I'm not motivated to study. I feel horrible. Any ideas on what to take to feel better and if anyone else experienced these symptoms during a flare? Thank you!

yes, I have all those symptoms. When ever I come out of remission, and go back into flare, it always seems to get a bit worse, and new synptoms are added.

I also have stomach pain, and low back pain and at times vomiting..

Yeah, all those symptoms I get from time to time. In fact I am always feeling atleast one of those symptoms. I am always exhausted, its a rare day that I feel vibrant and full of energy, or I should say some mornings or evenings, but I always need to have a flipping lie down at some point, lol. I wonder if any of your symptoms are a result of the stress from the exams you have next week. Please try to relax, get a massage, get your hair done, do something to relax, do some yoga or something. Are you on Prednisone? That messed my period while I was on it.

Thank you for your responses. I am feeling a little better. I went to the gym and also took Pepto Bismol. I am sorry both of you experience similar symptoms. I am not on Prednisone. I am on Lialda. I have never had irregular periods before while on Lialda or on this same bc pill. I've been talking Lialda for about 2 years and this bc pill for about 1 year.

Right now I feel really bloated, feeling like I need to go number 2 but all I have is mucus. Is this normal? I hate this feeling. :-(

These are all fairly normal symptoms of a flare. You are currently experiencing urgency, also commonly felt during a flare. Though most GI's maintain that stress is unrelated to the onset of a flare, I believe most people who participate in this forum (myself included) would say that stress contributes to the onset of a flare. Your best bet right now is to find ways to manage the stress despite your upcoming exams, get plenty of rest and discuss the addition of second medication to get this flare under control.

your period may be messed up because you aren't fully absorbing the birth control pill.  you might want to use a backup method just in case...at least that's what my gyocologist suggested to me!  hope you feel better.

If you're interested in seeing how diet might help you, google Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) and also the book "What to Eat with IBD." Some here have found the SCD to really help them, and others of us find diet doesn't affect as so much - I find the "What to Eat" book helpful in regard to making choices in "regular" foods.
One thing that's helped me enormously is that I take probiotics. They really seem to help me in a dramatic way.... Align is a common one, but Ultimate Flora, Primadophilus, and of course VSL (I take the Double Strength one, by prescription.)
And have you tried rectal meds, canasa suppositories or Rowasa retention enemas (basically the same medication as in the Lialda) or steroid enemas....?

You're probably on the way to flaring considering you're not on rectal meds, having irregular periods even though you're on the pill (you need to get that dealt with because that pill isn't working for you), during extreme stressful exam time (I'm sure you'll do well on all of them!)...etc.

If you do the diet...great....but it won't change the fact that you're not on enough meds to deal with your flare, the hormonal influences on your UC and some of your symptlms.

Please, get on rectal meds...and I would initially suggest Rowasa retention enemas.

Breaking the vicious cycle is a very helpful book. I have used a modified version of SCD diet for several years now. There is a large group of individuals and several forums of people who follow this diet for various health conditions. I have used this diet as well as probiotics to remain in remission but I took the advice of western medicine to help me get there. Quincy's recommendation of treating from the other end is a good one, especially with your symptom of urgency. The symptom of urgency is indicative of distal involvement. Distal disease of the colon tends to respond well to suppository/rectal treatment.
