The UC episode of the Sopranos?

I didn't watch the Sopranos when it was telecast, because I didn't have HBO. I am now getting all the episodes from Netflix.

There is a main character in it(Adriana) that was just diagnosed with UC after she had a colonoscopy.

The doc told her it may be due to stress.

I have never heard this before.  I know it's just a tv program, but the directors usually try to stick pretty close to fact in things like this.

I also think the one scene where she is frantic to find a bathroom, and the person driving her says, well I'll just drop you off at your car, and you can find a bathroom.( so typical of people who don't get it)

Adriana screams(crying) ...NO I NEED TO FIND ONE RIGHT NOW, RIGHT THIS SECOND I need to go number 2!!, and she jumps out of the car when it comes to a stop and runs into a service station bathroom.

It made me wonder if the director, or producer had experience with this disease.

Has anyone seen this episode, and have you ever heard of UC being related to stress?

Yes, my GI always tells me I need to relax and practice some kind of meditation or relaxation yoga/breathing. I don't find that any of these activities help me destress so I don't bother but I definitely feel that I am a wound-up person in general and I need to take it easy. I am usually tense. It's annoying, I know I am this way but I can't stop myself from being this way. I'v tried medication and it hasn't helped too much. I've tried talking to someone and that also wasn't helpful.

I didn't see that episode of the sopranos but that's interesting that they gave a character UC.

I've heard about that episode, in fact when it first came out it was discussed on here. But stress plays a huge part in my flares. I am usually good under pressure but once the dust settles, I end up flaring. I don't believe it triggered my Uc; I believe food poisoning and over usage of antibiotics did.

My first GI called the idea of stress affecting UC "old thinking." My new GI believes it does affect the condition. I think my current GI is the better of the two.

On another note, I was watching an episode of Fringe season two last week, and the bad guys were importing super, genetically modified hookworms to sell to people with AI diseases.

There was an episode of the tv show Scrubs that addressed UC. The two main characters (one is a general physician, the other a general surgeon) argue over the medical vs surgical treatment of the UC patient. I don't remember what the outcome was. I remember seeing the episode when I was first diagnosed but my memory from that period is very patchy. 100 mg of prednisone a day will do that to you.

Sorry, I know this post was about the Soprano's episode but it triggered my television memory... the Scrubs episode was called "My way or the highway". I found an piece of the dialogue that I think those of us with UC (though painfully true) have to chuckle at.

Turk: That was before I looked at his chart. He's had ulcerative colitis for the past ten years.

I haven't heard of stress being a causative factor for the disease itself, but personal experience indicates that it is most defiantly a factor in triggering flares.

I heard immediately after being diagnosed that stress can cause flares and so when I got through breast cancer without a flare I thought I was never going to have another flare. Then I had reconstruction (plastic surgery) and that turned out to be WAY more stressful and upsetting than anything connected with actual cancer treatment and boom, my second flare started. When I was talking with my GI about the flare, he asked me if I could think of any precipitating event, and I mentioned the stress issue and he agreed that was likely the cause.

Big Sopranos fan. I rented or borrowed all the episodes. Didn't recall UC in an episode until it was described here. I guess it rings a bell but I wasn't diagnosed then.

Yes. Stress is a known trigger for flares.

However, for me, my IBD is due to antibiotic abuse. So stress doesn't play much of a role in my case.
