Thanks for introducing this idea. I spent the last 7 days trying it out and believe it has real positive potential for UC'ers.
I didn't feel up to a whole day without food so after reading up on it I decided I'd try the 19/5 timing. That is no food for 19 hours and eat in a 5 hour window. I chose to skip breakfast and lunch and eat in the afternoon/dinner.
It is easier than I thought, except that the Sunday I started was the Daylight Savings time change and I spent all day confused about
what time I should start eating.
Sunday went very well anyway and I ate from 3pm to 8 pm. I always get hungry around teatime so that was perfect. Skipping breakfast and lunch was pretty easy as long as I stayed out of the kitchen.
Monday is my tennis day and I wondered how I'd do with no breakfast. The answer is:GREAT. My stomach and colon were so peaceful and my energy level was fantastic. I won all my matches, not an everyday event for me. And I was not fatigued afterwards. just made sure I had lots of fluids all day long.
The rest of the week went just as well. Since I'm not looking to lose weight I tinkered a bit with fluid intake and along with lots of water (I live in South Florida) I allowed chicken stock, honey in my tea plus coconut milk instead of dairy. IOW I allowed any fluid and all calories, just nothing solid.
I weighed myself yesterday and I'm one half pound less but that is probably not statistically significant. My weight goes up and down 2-3 pounds on any given day. lol.
Conclusion: What I like about
intermittent fasting is that it seems to give my colon a nice rest. Instead of working all day/night long it works only 1/3 the time and is much more peaceful. Kind of like before-UC.
I think IF (intermittent fasting or feasting some people call it) could be used in conjunction with diet modification (I am sticking with SCD) to help heal the colon faster.
IF has not caused me ANY side effects (fatigue, low energy or brain power) in fact the opposite.
If someone had told me about
IF years ago I would have said "no thanks" cause I love my food. This last year's SCD diet mod. has taught me the discipline needed to reach remission.
I was 95% better using SCDiet and looking for the last piece of the puzzle. For me "intermittent fasting" is the last 5%.
Thanks again for the idea. This forum is awesome, with great people finding new ways since medical science doesn't work well for many of us.
