This is not to scare anyone or otherwise and take this information with a grain of salt.
My mother was diagnosed with UC in early 90s and was suggested to get colon removed. She didn't go for it. Took medication for about 3 years, remained on Sulfasalazine (oral) for about a year and stopped thereafter against medical advice due to financial reasons. Since then is she is off the meds and no UC symptoms. Hope it remains like this. Now comes the worse part, she didn't learn her lesson. She doesn't maintain her diet, yet no UC symptoms. 2 years ago, one morning her eye she got up with a swollen eye and throbbing pain in the eye. The eye looked like frog's eye and felt like it would pop out anytime. Emergency visit to the ophthalmologist resulted in steroid eye drops and the swelling reduced quite quickly.
The diagnosis was some kind of inflammation and he connected the distant dot to UC. The eye swelling repeated at least few dozen times since then and only way out was steroid eye drops. Again, no sign of since few months. She visited few other ophthalmologists but they found no abnormality with the eye, even when there was swelling or when the swelling was progressing.
It starts like itching as if something like dirt is in your eye, the eye gets really red then comes throbbing pain and last comes swelling. The vision becomes blurry.
BTW, my mom is 52 years old.
