My wife and I have been trying to conceive, unsuccessfully for over a year. I have had UC for >4 years and been regularly taking prednisolone, with a couple of remicade infusions in the past year. Sperm count is lower end of ok, mobility and shape very poor.

My specialist tells me that UC shouldn't really effect my fertility (but didn't rule out the lack of absorbtion of nutrients adversely impacting it). He also didn't think the meds would necessarily be a problem - but this conflicts other articles I've read and other things I've been told (admittedly not by medical experts).

We are booked to see a fertility specialist in a few weeks, but I was wondering if anyone else had experienced similar problems and could either relate their experience or give any advice?

Hey, my wife and I tried to conceive for two years while I was on Sulfasalizine, and remicade....Switched to asacol and we got pregnant the next month....Baby is due next week. My doc says that the only drug that should effect fertility is sulfasalizine which it was

Congrats Nightside - I'd read about Sulfasalizine as being a problem, but I'm already on Balsalazide which is supposedly OK. Glad to hear about a good outcome though. Good luck with the new arrival!

Bobbymanc, I found when I was on the higher dosage of prednisone (40mg) that my libido was almost behaving as though I'd taken a little blue pill.  (I'm in my sixties)  I know this is no indication of actual sperm count (which would be somewhat low at my age)     I suspect it was the 'adrenalin rush' more than anything else but not bad all the same if I say so myself.

Btw, you're not Roberto Mancini by any chance?  smilewinkgrin

Alinus - I'm on Balsalazide not sulfasalazine - so hopefully ok there.

Mackster - libido not really the issue, just the results!
And no, no relation to Signore Mancini - although you'll have probably guessed which city I live in, so he's not too far away!

To OP,

I was told that we 'could' face difficulties if we are trying for a child when I started on Balsalazide. Check with your GI and if you already have an appointment with fertility clinic, it will be clear in your sperm count and/or their health.

bobbymanc, you only have to take them for swimming lessons, I'm sure there's lots of pools in the Stockport/S.Manchester area! devil

Have you tried drinking Guinness?
