For the past 4 weeks or so I have noticed that during each week I will have one bowel movement in which the toilet water will be a very dark blackish/purplish/redish colour. The stool that I poop out will sometimes be formed (but disintegrate once in the water) or will come out mushy. When looking at the formed stool that is in the dark water, it is a normal brown colour with no white mucus around it. After wiping myself, there will be no red blood on the toilet paper, just the normal thing I usually see.
Here's where it becomes even more confusing... this dark water BM will only occur ONCE every week (on a random day). All other BMs for the week (even any additional BMs I have on the same day of the dark water BM) will be normal, with no blood or mucus. Over these 4 weeks I have had slight lower abdominal pain (which my GI attributes to IBS) and no blood or mucus. BMs have averaged around 2 - 3 times a day (which has always been the usual for me). I have not consulted my GI over this issue yet but I will the next time I see him.
I am certain it has nothing to do with my diet because each time I have had the dark water BM my diet has been different. I have also not taken anything to make my stool a dark colour (such as blueberries). Originally I thought it was the Salofalk 1.5g granules (twice daily) I had started 4 weeks ago so last week when I had the dark water BM I stopped the Salofalk granules. However, today I had another dark water BM (after 6 days of stopping the Salofalk) so I doubt it is the Salofalk.
As I said, the most confusing part is how it only occurs once a week...
Anyone have any ideas? I am going in for a colonoscopy on the 10th of Jan to see if there is anything wrong.
P.S My history: Was diagnosed with UP on 1st of October 2010 after 6 months of slight bleeding with no other symptoms. Have since been taking suppositories and enemas to reduce inflammation. Most recent colonoscopy was on 30th November. States that there is slight inflammation on cecum and in the rectum.
