Bleeding with normal bm's

Hi,

I have been bleeding more with normal bm's. Still have bloody mucous. On 6 sulfasalazine's for now. No rectal med's. Just started a new job a few weeks ago and already had to call in sick today.

Seeing doc this afternoon. I am upset and scared.

Why no rectal meds? When you talk to your doc be sure to bring it up about the rectal meds. They can definitely help with the bleeding.

Thanks Sherry. I definitely will. I was on Canasa by itself before the sulfasalazine. It worked for a few days and then stopped. Which do you recommend. I was going to ask for Rowasa. From what I remember, it worked really well during my first flare 25 years ago!

Remember that the reason it stopped working is that it wasn't enough medication. It's not a failure...it's just a first step to further meds.

Some docs start small, some start with a bang, and others start in between.

One thing you'll eventually get...you need to treat both ends. asap, call the doc and request the enemas. There are two choices, 2g and 4g medication.

Unless you have really low rectal inflammation, I consider the Canasa pointless because it won't go any higher unless you stack them. If you have any inflammation that is higher, then I definitely recommend Rowasa.

I use both Canasa and Rowasa and I think it's nice to have both options. If I have cramping and don't feel like I could comfmortably use an enema, I'll use the suppositories. Are the oral meds you're taking 400mg? 6 400mg is a maintenence dose. You may consider going up to 9 or 12 pills a day if you're flaring up and 6 isn't helping.

I asked the doctor for Rowasa and got the generic today. He is keeping me on 6-500mg's a day of the Sulphasalazine plus the Rowasa nightly. If the bleeding doesn't stop in 3 weeks he is going to put me on prednisone which he really doesn't want to do, and neither do I.

Great you got the enemas.

Now, regarding bleeding...I bled for a few months, but other symptoms were improving. My doc said..."be patient and let the meds do their thing"...

Don't let the doc push you to pred...if you have improvement, request that you stay on the enemas nightly for at least a few months.

It takes time for the butt to heal, and for some it can take up to 6 months or so....

Keep us posted on how you're doing.

Try slippery elm...it helps to heal ulcers and inflammation.

Thanks everyone for your advice and suggestions! It really helps me feel better mentally. One question I have is does anyone feel that extra fiber is needed. I am getting to the point that sometimes I feel constipated. When I first was diagnosed 25 years ago I remember taking Citracil nightly. This is my first flare since then so I don't remember if it helped. I think it did. Discussed with my doc yesterday and he said it couldn't hurt. He suggested Benefiber because there is no taste.
Also, I don't know how to handle my work situation. I just started a month ago and I have already been out the past 2 days. I told them I had the stomach flu because I'm afraid if they know I have colitis they will fire me since I am still new. I am so depressed right now and I really don't want to go back there but I need the money. It has taken me 2 years to find a job and then the UC flare.

Sometimes when I bleed it's uc and others hemmies, any of the rectal meds work well for both.
