New here....side effects of Asacol :-)

Hello forum,

My name's Keith, 25, and have just been diagnoised with UC (awaiting confirmation of tests results of tissue samples taken in Colonoscopy) and have been prescribed Asacol (400mg 2 tablets/3 times days).  I have only been on this for 4 days now, and apart from getting a bit sleepy I didn't think I was getting any other side effects.  However on the last 2 nights I have been waking up in the middle of the night covered in sweat.  This wasn't a side effect that was listed on the information i recieved about the drug.  Does anyone know if this an additional affect of the drug, as I haven't suffered from this before nor have I been dreaming about anything that would set this off?

Also, if this is common, is there anything anyone can suggest that might help this? Or should this be something I see by Doctor about?

It's unusual for Asacol for have side effects, although some people have a reaction that prevents them from taking it. It's actually simply an anti-inflammatory, like aspirin, that has a special coating that keeps it from dissolving until it reaches the ph of the colon.

Your night sweats may be caused by the UC itself. Certainly mention it to your doctor, but I don't think there is much that can be done about it.

Are you flared up? If you're dealing with inflammation, it could cause a fever and sweating. I didn't find that Asacol caused me too many side effects, it helped me a ton for about a year and then stopped being effective. Quite a few people can't tolerate Asacol. I would keep an eye on the side effects and report them to your GI.

yes, it could be flaring and possibly the addition of a medication. If your body is stepping up to heal, a fever could be part of it.
You can take tylenol before bedtime...that might help for that symptom.

I would stress you should be on rectal meds as well...when do you see the doc again?

Where exactly is your UC located...throughout or limited?

Fever and sweating can be part of a flareup, also if your body cannot tolerate Asacol at higher dosage, then Asacol could add to your fever. I would give it at least 3 weeks and see if you improve or not.
Some reason these drugs seem to make you worse sometimes before helping, but if it doesn't start helping by 3 weeks and if increased dosages makes you sicker, than there may be a problem of not being able to tolerate the drug.
