Has anyone had trouble with weight gain since being on meds for colitis?  I've not only had weight gain, but extreme trouble taking any weight off.

Prednisone will do it. But I don't think maintenance meds affect that.

When your flare comes down you gain weight because your food is not passing through you rapidly and creating diarrhea, which causes weight loss.

Journey2health is right on that one. I didn't have problems with anything, but Prednisone. Prednisone will make you blow up and fast. I had a bad run and was on it a lot in high school I started out 160lbs and ended at 200 something. In my case I put on enough fast enough that I became insulin resistant and am now battling PCOS. Have you tried restricting your sugar intake? I managed to lose 40lbs just cutting out as much sugar as possible before my friend prednisone came back in the picture and I tacked it back on. I tried to make sure whatever I ate had at least 1 dietary fiber for every 2 or 3 sugars or sugar alcohol. If I had soda at all it was diet. On Saturday I had whatever I wanted for one meal to curb the cheating temptation. Not sure how it would work for anyone else, but for the insulin resistance it was a great one! I will attempt it again when my feelings get un-hurt, lol.

Funny you ask that about the weight gain!  I was just diagnosed with UC in Nov 2010.  Still on Prednisone and am looking for alternitives... the reason I found this sight. Not only did I just gain 15 lbs in 3 weeks, it caused me to have a bad yeast infection,  in which I added another medication to keep the yeast infection away, and I am growing facial hair above the lip!!!! May for a guy this would be okay BUT not for me!!!  I go back to the docs this thursday.  Doc mentioned the remicade, which I might do.   But I have started to look into the Specific Carbohydrate Diet.

Remember, wildkids, you just can't drop prednisone. You have to taper off of it.

I heard it hard to taper off Prednisone. There was a doctor in VA who was really good with administering steroid treatments and I heard he was able to ween people off Pred by first switching them to another steroid and then tapering. Unfortunately this doctor has passed away.

You may want to ask you doc about this method.
It's called Dr. William McK. Jefferies' protocol.
