If you could live anywhere, where would it be?

Does the healthcare system play a part in your decision?

Would anyone currently living in a place with universal healthcare consider moving to the US?

This is not meant to turn into a debate about healthcare.

I would like to live in Europe or Australia and healthcare does play a part.

I love the state of Michigan, could not imagine living anywhere else.

Max: Would you want to live here? I have some friends from Australia that are living in the US and don't want to return to AU. I don't get it...

Is it more laidback there? Life is very work oriented here.

Hocking Hills, OH - in a cabin, with 10 toilets. Just in case. And oh yeah, 2 plumbling/sewage pipes, not 1. For obvious reasons. Heck, maybe even an out house, why not.....j/k.....

Universal health care would appeal to me, since I'm a lib.

Invercargill NZ of all places, it surprised even me, but when my partner and I went through what we want long term that appeared to be the best option. Healthcare wasn't really factored in - thinking about it the region seems to be going through a problem with provision of screening colonoscopies in the public system, but I expect they'll sort it out before we could move (5 yrs +).

I've never really thought about long term planning with healthcare in mind. Here in Auckland I see my GI privately, but in the public system he works for a different hospital than I go to. He raised it as an issue if I needed more than the in-house type of appointments, which - with some relief -I never did.

I haven't worked in any other country so I can't really judge whether we're laid back here or not. The good thing is we have lots of space haha, lots of cultures and nice beaches but crazy weather and a parliament which doesnt know how to lead. I wouldn't want to live in the US, but wouldn't say I am entirely happy living in Australia either.

I don't know if I would like to LIVE anywhere else, but I wouldn't mind visiting. I'm a Michigan girl born and bred so I am quite happy to be here even though the economy stinks.

I want to live in south-eastern or south-central Washington State.

Health care does play a part in my decision. And that was before I knew I had UC.

I actually am loving living here in Arizona. The only reason that brought us here to Arizona is my hubby's job, but because of his job we realized that this state where we belong. I had wanted to live somewhere colder like Idaho or Montana, but the job brought us here and I believe this is where we will stay.

I sometimes think it would be nice to do what the old ppl do here and live in Florida or somewhere without snow for half the year!
But I love Canada and like Ontario just fine...except when it's -30:)

I'm not sure I could live anywhere colder than California, but I could live in Singapore!! I'm not much of a city girl but find Singapore to be the world's most livable city. Great public transportation, fantastic year round weather, lots of open green space, and extremely safe all hours of the day and night.

I don't know, my hubby and I keep talking about this since we are nearing retirement age. We keep watching Anthony Bourdain -- No Reservations, and from his shows, I want to live in a lot of different places. Well, maybe just visit. I have though a lot about Italy, but the places my husband and I seem to like have about the same climate and landscape as California, so I guess we are living where we want to. I wish we had a better transporation system and a healthcare system that I felt comfortable with, so yes, healthcare would play a part in my decision of where I lived, especially at this time in my life.

New England!!!! Been here all my life, always on the coast. But I'd love to live inland too, in the mountains- as long as I can swim in a pond or lake. You can't beat NE for the beautiful seasons, I could never live someplace where the weather doesn't change thruout the year. Healthcare has no bearing at all. I can't imagine moving to another country- my family, friends, job are all here.

I want to live somewhere warm and tropical with a beach to walk on. I have not figured out the specifics yet. I prefer to stay in the US as this is where my family is. As far as how my UC plays into it, I would like to live near a city which has good docs. and some cultural life too. I am thinking possibly Sarasota, Florida. I use to live on Bradenton Beach in Fla and I love the calm, clear waters of the Gulf and the white sands.

Sue, we are spoiled in California. I always contemplate moving somewhere but the reality is that I am so used to having beautiful weather the majority of the year, I am not sure I would be happy somewhere else. You're right about singapore but they do get a lot more rain and humidity than us. That is much better than cold and snow in my opinion but I'm not a huge fan of humidity. Singapore is a small place but it's just a hop to other destinations. I am not sure if I could live there but I've heard a lot of positive things.

Of course I would love to live on an island somewhere but I don't think I could make enough money to survive on an island unfortunately.

I wouldn't mind living somewhere where I could get health insurance. Here in TX, I am losing my COBRA and my kids on a state program are losing their insurance too because I make just a smidgen too much money. TX health risk pool is only option but at $950 for me and 2 kids a month - yikes! I have no other options as I am automatically denied for private health care coverage due to UC and you cannot insure kids alone in TX, unless it is through the state kids program which we are losing!

don't know what to do except move to a warm place where I can get health insurance :( just can't afford it or want to give up my dream job!

I would love to go back to Canada. My brother lives in Montreal. I miss him a lot. I live in Portland, Oregon. I have been trying to persuade my husband to leave for almost 30 years. It is a beautiful state but the higher education system is horrible. America's safety nets for women and children are the worst of all the developed nations. I am very scared of retiring here.

I feel the same way Subzero. I have a long time before I retire but I see elderly homeless women all over this city. I am sure most of them never imagined they would end up that way... It is scary.

As for health care, as long as you have good benefits through work, the health care system is great. Lived the first 30 years of my life in Canada. The waiting list times for specialists are ridiculous... avg 1 year. Even when I was deathly ill with pancolitis I was told I would have to wait 8 months to get in to see a GI doc.

If you are out of work, or can't work, getting health insurance in the U.S. is expensive or difficult if you are under 65 years old.
