I have gotten to the point where I am going to start Prednisone. If not I will end up in the hospital. I am only 7 wks preg and scared to take it. Anybody else have successful pregnancy and healthy baby while starting it in first trimester? I am just so sick with this now I am out of options.

Have you asked on babycenter? There's a large and active forum for pregnant women and new moms with UC and CD on that site.

The only concern I've heard with using prednisone in pregnancy is a slight increase in risk of cleft palate if used in the first trimester. Honestly, if I were in your shoes, I'd take it. No, cleft palate isn't a good thing, but at least it is something that can be fixed surgically. A good friend of mine just had a baby with a cleft palate (no known reason) and they're doing fine so far, other than some increased gassiness/fussiness because he takes in more air when he eats than most babies.

hi i was on steroids when i was pregnant with a flare. My baby turned out fine and a normal birth. The only different thing was that the baby seemed to grow a little bigger due to the steroids but it was not extreme. I only had a 7lb 2 oz baby and the labour was 4 hours no pain meds and no complications. He was my 3rd child and he was on par with the other two births. It did not effect him or me in anyway. The only thing i suggest is you talk to your GI and make sure that any of the other meds you are taking will effect the baby. I know i had to stop one of my meds 8 weeks before i gave birth as it can cross the placenta when in labour and effect the baby. But that was just imuran/ azathioprine..

Wait, so was the doctor wrong before, and your baby is okay?

I would probably take the pred. From what I read, it is relatively safe. Surely it's better than a flare.

Last night I spent the night on the bathroom floor.  I was terrible.  Spoke with my GI today and we agreed to use the Prednisone.  We will go aggressive at first and try to get me off quick.  As sick as I was from the flare is far worse for the baby than the medicine is so I took it.  I have to say I have never felt better in these last  few hours. 

I really tried to hold off.  I just can't physically kill myself for another five weeks to start it.  Now let the fun from the steroids begin.  At least I will have my energy back and put the weight back on.

Hi Boxermom,

Glad you are starting to feel better and you have held onto your pregnancy.

I am off the Humira now and hoping things will be ok. I am on the loo a little more, so trying to cut back on the foods that make me worse to avoid the pred as long as possible.

Next week I will be 8wks. I was so extremely sick the steroids were the only answer. I feel a tiny bit better but they just don't kick in like before. I hope I dis the right thing. I am very nervous. Last time I tried to do everything right and lost the baby anyway. Hope you feel better IG.

Thinking of you. I am glad that you are finding some relief. For what it is worth, the one pregnancy that I wasn't on medication with (not UC medication, but anxiety/depression medication), was the one pregnancy where our baby had a serious problem. I am a firm believer that, provided the Dr. believes the benefits outweigh the risks, a healthier mom usually results in a healthier baby.

Hope this flare gets under control really soon so that you can enjoy your pregnancy to the fullest.
