ASACOL SIDE EFFECTS

Hi

My Mum has been in remmission for a year, then a couple of weeks ago she passed some blood. The colitis nurse said to increase her 800mg asacol twice a day to six a day. Blood went straight away, but her blood pressure has gone up quite high...... last night we had to go to hospital as she was very hot and shaky, also said had dry mouth and nauseus on and off. The doctor put it down to anxiety ( she is anxious as has found a lump in groin which another doctor told her it was probably cancer!) Obviously he shouldnt have done that and she is due for biopsy soon.........scan showed it is a enlarged lymph node, but showed no other lumps.

Another doc has said to lower the asacol as could be that causing symptoms.....what do you all think?!

The only side effect I had when I first started Asacol was a bit of hair loss. I am not sure if it was from the Asacol or the anemia...

I have heard of other people having side effects and allergies, it is possible that she is having side effects.

I can't believe the doctor said the lump was probably cancer. That's awful to say to someone without doing any tests.

It's hard to tell. I have several side effects to Asacol but not high blood pressure.
Try looking up side effects for Asacol on http://www.ehealthme.com/.
This will tell you if other have experienced high blood pressure or not.

I have heard that Asacol can cause nausea. I have also experienced the thinning hair from Asacol. My pharmacist once told me that a number of the UC oral meds list nausea as one of the potential side effects.

Your poor mom. What a horrible thing for the Dr. to say. When is your mom's biopsy scheduled for? I hope she doesn't have to wait too long.

When I was first diagnosed I was put on asacol(I think 6 a day), within a week I was having wrist and neck stiffness, then I started feeling sick to my stomach and I started getting very severe stomach cramps. I went off it and started lialda a month later. The same thing happened. I then tried asacol one more time before starting 6mp and with in an hour of taking the asacol I was throwing up and had severe stomach cramps. I can't take any 5 asa's, the 6 mp I had the same thing happen.

no side affects except the purple spots on the bowl rim. I was switched to Colazol and then Lialda after flare ups. good luck
