Asacol and dark urine

I've been having dark urine for the past three or four months. Normally it's just a little darker but recently it started getting a lot darker... almost like a dark rusty/gold type colour. I've been having so many symptoms over the past year that I ignored it at first and then I realized it could be a side effect of asacol.

What does this mean and should I stop taking asacol/switch to something else?

Could be that or some supplements can cause this too

I'm not on any supplements at the moment though. The only medication I take is Asacol.

     Drink more water.  I had dark urine when taking Colazal.

See a doctor!

Asacol is eliminated through the kidneys and one of the rare but serious side effects is nephritis or nephrotic syndrome: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mesalazine.

If your urine is unusually dark, get your bloodwork done and your urine checked, just to be safe.

I am not trying to worry you. I am not a doctor and I have no details on your other symptoms, but I'd have it looked at. Hopefully you don't have to pay out of pocket for tests...

If it has only just started to get darker after 3 months of Asacol it seems unlikely to be that. I've been on Asacol for 4 months and my urine has been dark at times (also the smell changes on occasion) - it's down to diet and liquids.

I make sure I drink more water when it happens and it clears up. If it hadn't cleared up after a week I may go to the doctors.

It can also be caused by other ailments such as a common cold - again, you are advised to drink more liquids (water) during these times.

Drink lots and lots of fluids but also have yourself checked out to be on the safe side. Like Jking stated, Asacol can affect the kidneys but it's rare.

As a side note, I was having some issues last year with darker urine so I went to a urologist and found I had micro-hematuria (microscopic blood in the urine). I had a cystoscopy done but she couldn't find the cause. So my next stop would've been a nephrologist but the blood disappeared.
