yeasty butt

as many of you know chris has been taking/ tapering vancomycin for the last 8 weeks to try to beat his stubborn C-diff infection. his poor little butt is paying a heavy price for it. he's caught a few little preschool bugs over the last couple of weeks and had some D and leakiness, and i'm not so sure the c-diff is all the way gone (but that's another story). the nystatin cream was working for a while, and we've started using a nystatin powder too, but the last few days his hiney has gotten pretty bad red and raw spots. i can't even touch it without him crying. i'm making him lay around nakey after baths to dry it out several times a day. thinking about getting some monostat or something. any suggestions?

I think I would try the monistat but I find that OTC products never work too well. Some of those yeast infection 3 day kits come with some cream that could help. You may need to call your primary and get a prescription cream. My dog has a yeast in his ear and they gave him a prescription cream that seems tot be helping.

I had a little boy in my class (I work with toddlers) who used to use Lotrimin on his bottom when it got really bad. It seemed to work for him. Also, if you haven't already tried it you might want to stop using baby wipes (if you are using them). They often contain alcohol which can be tough on sore bottoms, and they are also designed to hold moisture (the same stuff that keeps the wipes moist can keep a bottom moist). I would recommend using rinsed wipes (rinse in the sink), wet paper towels, or just wet washcloth. Also soaking in epsom salts may provide some relief. As a teacher, I see a lot of diaper rashes, and these are tips parents have shared with me over the years.

I would avoid cornstarch! If the rash is not yeast it works great but if it is yeast cornstarch is food for it! I think NSSG has the right idea, I'd try an Rx for yeast cream! Also, is he taking probiotics? I wonder if that would help?

it's looking much better today, he's not as leaky so it's staying dry.
he's taking 3 probiotics: culturelle, florastor and ultimate flora critical care
one dose of vancomycin every third day to be completed on the 8th of feb.

i've been having him bathe with mild soap and rinse thoroughly. not using the hair dryer often because i don't want to heat. just having him lay with his butt open/exposed to air dry. then when it's good and dry i put the nystatin powder on and top it with calmoseptine. seems to be working. it just had gotten so red and raw yesterday. should be over with after the antibiotics. gonna look into the canesten.

Get a special antifungal powder ie Zeasorb AF which are sold OTC; the poster above that said cornstarch based powers feeding yeast is spot on so avoid these. My derma doc said UC and yeast go hand and hand. For stubborn cases I use Lamasil for about a week plus the powder and it works very well.

cmfiebke, If you google cornstarch and yeast infection/rash everything that comes up warns you that the yeast feeds off the cornstarch and the rash will get worse. Maybe the children you treated did not have a yeast rash.

I've found the only J&J baby powder that is talc and not cornstarch is the original.
I wonder about corn products these days, high fructose corn syrup, corn being hard on the gi tract, cornstarch feeding yeast and even ethanol a corn based fuel additive is harsh on engines and needs to be limited in the content of gasoline...

I am not arguing, and I am not claiming that I am a doctor....all I was saying is that it is interesting that I had used it for over 20 years and I had always had it almost instantly help. I was not the doctor who treated the children, and I had never had one of the children get worse....maybe I never had a child in my care have a true yeast infection.....I was just giving the old home treatment that had always worked for us....I do not claim that this is a cure all, I was just saying that it has worked for us. I know that many people are looking here for remedies that might be outside the norm. I know that what has or is working for me might not work for others and that what hurts others might not hurt me....I was just giving a thought for a parent who sounded desperate to try something because what she was trying wasn't. I do not google every treatment that my doctors give me, maybe I should, but maybe then I would terrify myself and not trust anything. I thought that this is what this forum is for, to talk as friends and co UC patients to help each other in ways that doctors can not. I would never claim to know what will cure anyone....All I know is that I have had over twenty years experience with children and I have always used only cornstarch for sore bottoms and I have always had great out comes.

I know, I must be pmsing, and I really wouldn''t want to say something that would hurt anyone, I just truely had always used this treatment to wonderful success and I have never heard of why yeast and cornstarch would be bad together. I was truely just showing my astonishment about it. I guess I have been lucky all these years.

My sister introduced us to a product sold in Austria and it has worked wonders for us. It is called pelsana med and she uses it for her little guys when they had problems, we've used it for rashes, etc.

I know that's is so far away but it is very nice. She sends it down when we need it and so far not too often for it!
