Hi, do any of you suffer from migraines and or joint pain. What do you use for them? I am seeing my doctor tomorrow, but wanted to know what you all use for relief. I have been using ibuprofen and other such meds. I now know that I can not take these. Just curious. Had a killer migraine this weekend and did not know if it was ok to take Excedrin or not. I am seeing my fam. phys. and wanted to be prepared. I do not see my GI until the 23.

Excedrin sometimes cures my headaches. Make sure you get the one without Aspirin(NSAID). Not sure how you handle caffeine, without aspirin, remaining ingredient is acetaminophen and caffeine

Ibuprofen is also an NSAID. Do you have Colitis? Wouldn't recommend any NSAID's if you do.

I find great relief from headaches from a pain pill, percoset/vicodin, etc.. not sure if my Dr will give me an Rx for this though. I plan to ask.

I've been using Ponstel for my migraines. I've never had any medication that could beat a migraine before I got a prescription for Ponstel. It is a NSAID but so are most migraine relievers. I have tried Tylenol and had absolutely no improvement in a migraine. I don't care much for painkillers. I used to take darvocet for migraines but it didn't work as well as Ponstel. I don't really have joint pain so I can't speak as to whether it would be helpful with that. I have awful neck and back pain and I think I have it even if I take my migraine meds.

The Nsaids was what I am questioning. I take tylenol for normal headaches, but it does not touch a migraine or seem to help with the joint pain. I guess I will find out in the morning.

We shouldn't take NSAIDS with colitis but my migraines have gotten so bad that I really don't have an option. If you find something please let me know.

notsosicklygirl - sorry to hear about your headaches. I remember years ago telling a friend I'd pay $10,000 USD if someone can cure my headaches. Still searching....surprised your Dr/GI are okay with giving you NSAIDS? I guess it's treating migraines over harming Colitis? Have you noticed any ill effects? I didn't realize Excedrin has Aspirin until years after taking it, it definitely contributed to one flare, so thankful they have a non-asprin version.

Curious why you prefer NSAID/Ponstel over pain killers, I guess it depends how often you get the headaches? mind are not that frequent. Hope yours are not either.

Painkillers make me feel nauseous and itchy. They also don't fully cure the migraine. Ponstel has no side and it wipes out my migraines. My GI didn't prescribe it, my OBGYN did. I wonder why the pharmacy would let me fill it knowing I have Colitis but I guess they don't care so long as they get the money from my insurance company. I don't have a choice in the matter, the migraines are so painful and debilitating, I can't sleep when I have one and it could go on for 24+ hours. I haven't had any UC issues since taking Ponstel but I always worry I will flare up. I only get a migraine once or twice a month. I try to let it pass without taking anything but often times, it is so painful I have to take something.

I take fioricet or midrin...if my behind is just plain kicked (like this weekend) I pull out my now off the market darvocet..nursing those as long as I can!

I just got some free sample of Relpax migraine med. I get migraines from stress and during my period. Advil used to be the only thing that works but now that I can't take it, so I need to try something different.

Another thing that help was I went 100% off caffeine...and when I got my migraines I would drink a cup of regular coffee which helped. I also would put an ice pack on the back of my neck/head area.

Also picked up some Hyland's homeopathic headache tablets. Haven't tried them yet but there's no side effects. I was told the way homeopathic drug stimulate the body's natural healing. check out http://www.hylands.com/

Did you have the migraines before you started taking meds for UC? I'm on Lialda and mine are awful. Though I do not take any meds because it freaks me out (to add MORE chemicals to my body), but I absolutely chug water all day long to try and keep my head feeling normal. Though I'm not so sure that drinking a ton of water is good either since I'm sometimes drinking over 200 ounces a day. Anyways, maybe try drinking more water if you can- Lialda seems to dehydrate the heck out of my system.

I have suffered migraines all my life and have tried many thing. The only thing at present that i find helps is codeine so i take prodeine forte. This is fine for me sometimes it causes constipation but with the colitis i sometimes think its a good thing if you have loose bowels.

MNortherlight - Lialda did not increase my headaches. I've had them all my life. If anything they've decreased, though that could also be my increased workout regime and move to SoCal...sometimes a few tablespoons of honey really helps my headaches

Please let me know what your doc has to say. I get migraines too but luckily it's very random. For as long as I can remember, I would get migraines at least once a year and I too would take an Nsaid just to help ease it. *Knock on wood* I haven't had one in about 4 years but it's nice to know if there is something else I could try if it comes on again.

I too suffered from migraines all my life, long before UC was diagnosed. I used to take NSAID and later Imigran (supatriptan). The benefits were only short term.

Last year since i was suffering from constant headache wich my GP told was a migrane, i was refered to a neurologist and been diagnosed with Arnold Neuralgia and was put to Gabaran (gaparapentin if i remember well is the active substance).
It controls the migraines and the neuralgia also pretty well. Both of them kinda excacerbate in the begining of a big flare, but it's better than without medication.

I take Midrin. Used to take Advils but not anymore due to UC.

Asacol didn't contribute to my migraines either. I've been geting them for as long as I remember. I drink a lot of water and I've been told headaches can be tied to dehydration but i am not sure if the same is true for migraines. I have never had a migraine subside by drinking water though many of my friends believe that should be the case. What do they know? Most of them don't deal with migraines or headaches, they throw around these ideas as if they are cures for every person in the world.

I was given Topomax by a Neurologist and I never opened it after reading about memory problems all across the web. The brain is highly vascularized how is your BP etc. ?

I suffer from migraines about once a month and have tried several types of pills. I now use Migranal, a nasal spray and it works great!

Ok, my fam. dr had to reschedule for tomm. but my GI called and said I was not to take anything with aspirin and to call my family doctor for appt (lol) I thank you all for your responses, I will let you know what he says...

For those with hormonal migraines, get on calcium..I heard this years ago on Paul Harvey, tested it for several months..you have to stay on it at least 3 solid weeks prior to your cycle to work (I just stay on it all the time now), it completely stopped the hormonal migraines that I was guaranteed every month.

Also..midrin is hard to get right now! Anyone else have that problem! They've been out for months form teh supplier & are not sure when they will get more in...acckkk! That stuff is wonderful! Especially if you don't want to feel "drugged".

Meemers.. how much calcium do you take? I've noticed a trend in past 7-8 months that I get a migraine 2 days (and for 2 days) prior to my period. I'm about to get hit with another one this week so trying to up my water intake and going to try the honey suggestions found on here, but I can work in some calcium for the long run! I used to drink tons of milk but looking back I see I'm not drink as much anymore maybe my calcium intake is getting low...

FWIW I noticed today that the Ester-C I take(doc says is the better Vit-C) has calcium in it as well
