Diazepam induced flair up

I have noticed over the years that a few days of vallium (2mgs a day) seem to make flair ups worse. I know diazepam targets the gaba receptors in the gut, so I was wondering weather any of you has any info, or can share their experiances with this. Im in a Flair right now and looking for info. I also have Dysautonomia so meds are out as far as treatment go for the Proctosigmoidits. Also it seems like amino acids cause inflamation in my system too. Could just be the Dysautonomia...Foods really cause hell for me, so Im on the SCD diet. Any thoughts?

Hi...welcome to the forum! I, of course, had to look up dysautonomia...how were you diagnosed with it?
I have a niece who matches most of those symptoms exactly, and I can relate to some as well. Hence my enquiry as to how you were diagnosed.


Interestingly...I see the "prototype" was beriberi, which my dad suffered while in a japanese prison camp during WW II.

I don't know anything regarding the valium causing flares, but not being on any meds could very well be the cause solely.

What's the reason that any of the 5ASA medications would be off your list?

The SCD seems to have a broad range of food intake, except for some carbs...which could very well hamper vitamin B varieties.

Are you taking any supplements?

ARe you taking any probiotics?

What exactly are your symptoms at this point for your flare?

I Do take supplements and Probiotics, the reason I dont take meds is I have severe reactions to them, and even when I dont right off the bat, its only a matter of time before I end up in trouble with them. My cardio Doc keeps me far away from meds at all cost in my case. My flairs are garden variety, D, Blood, Mucus when its a bad one, weight lose and so on.

As far as the Dysautonomia, have your Doc do BP and heart rate readings lying down then standing up. As soon as she stands take the first standing reading, then have her stand there for 20 minutes taking BP and heart Rate readings every 5 minutes. Attention must go to Heart rates, if the HR is more then 30 BPM upon standing she needs a tilt table test. Also watch the BP if it drops when she stands she should also do the tilt table test. YOU have to find a DOC that knows Dysautonomia or you will be spinning your wheels. It took me 10 years to find out what was going on and get a definitive diagnosis. Dont let that happen to you guys.

Dosent really matter, just dont take meds, the outcome can be far worst then the problem im dealing with. I trust my Doc, and have been through to much hell from trying medication with this body.

How do you get over your flares if you can't take meds?

No I have taken lots of diazepam and it never caused a flareup.

I've taken xanax and didn't have a flare up.

I have had a number of patients through the years who use diazepam and/or lorazepam as an adjunctive treatment for ulcerative colitis and/or crohn's. It makes much more sense to me that diazepam, if anything, would help minimize flares. Any of the inhibiting medications of the central nervous system seem to dampen the severity of irritable bowel syndrome and likely would help UC/Crohn's as well. We don't call the gut the "second brain" for nothing...

Its probably just the fact that Im in a stressed zone when I do take the Diaz.

(a few times a year at most , for a few weeks at a time, 2 mgs every 48 hours, again I have dysautonomia so meds work differently for me at very low doses)

And stress more then anything I believe triggers the Colitis. But I have watched my reactions to everything from supplements, to foods, to Amino acids over the years, and whenever I calm down the system through the Gaba receptors weather it be Diaz, or Amino's It seems to trigger constipation which later goes into a flair. I also take 600 to 900 mgs of Mag-Cit to help keep my stools loose. It seems the first 6 inches of my morning stool tends to go hard and dry if I dont take the Mag-Cit...after that, its loose for the rest of the day until sun set, then tends to dry up again. Hope Im not being to graphic...Some pluming here...lol All thoughts on the matter welcome here.

This flair Im in now is a result of stress and catching a cold and a boat load of stress. Thanks for the input. :)

In reply to Sara 14, about how I deal with flair ups without meds, I can only say it's not easy. Through the grace of God I only have what is considered mild to moderate Proctosigmoiditis. So Im sure that goes a long way in me being able to navigate through flair ups med free. Although I can only pray that it lasts for a wile longer, it has been a hard way to go. So far its been a non inflammatory diet, along with the SCD diet, probiots, supplements, daily exercise, and keeping my sleep on a strict schedule. I stay away from heavy lifting as it too seems to cause problems, and keep a strict Faith in Christ. Its just the best I can do so far. Im always open to learning about how others are dealing with this.
