Why do people end up in the hospital with UC?

i have uc for 2 years. in a flare up now. went and saw dr and he wanted to know if i wanted to go into the hospital or if i was ok at home...had blood work done and my white blood cells are high and iron is border line.
had to do a stool kit and wont get the results for about a week. im on canasa and 3 asacol 800mg a day. i dont understand why he ask me that? and why some people end up in the hospital couple times a year.
i feel tired but still able to eat and drink and then poop it out. really have not lost any weight. so why do people end up in the hospital i would like to know.... thanks

is this a serious question?

Had I not gone into the hospital to receive treatment I would have died.

I was peeing blood out of my bum, I was severely dehydrated, I could not eat or drink anything without having extreme abdominal pains and bloody bms. Was intravenously pumped with steroids and saline to battle the flare and rehydrate.

People go to the hospital for UC because it is their last option. I couldn't even move without being in severe pain.

Hope that answers your question. As for why your doc asked you that.... ask him.

I have had remissions for as long as 10 years but when a flare is bad, I need the 24 hour watch for complications. Complications: mega toxic colon, seizures from too much blood loss, liver damage, bleeding kidneys, heart beat irregularities. My doctor always asks me if I think it is time for the hospital. After more than 2 decades I can tell what can be taken care of at home. I like having a doctor that shares decisions with me and trusts my opinion.

I almost had to go to the hospital. I had no insurance and I had been bleeding quite a bit daily for a long time. When I finally paid out of pocket to see a GI, I was under 100 pounds and very sick. I was exhausted and had no energy. The doctor asked me to get bloodwork and I was severely anemic, she said if I waited longer I would have needed a transfusion. I am so thankful I was able to get treatment when I did.

Usually the people that end up in the hospital is because they can not control their symptoms and pain at home. It gets to the point that it can be dangerous to NOT go. I have never been hospitalized for my Uc in 19 years until this past December. I didn't realize how bad I actually was until I got there and had a CT scan. I thought I could handle it at home but the pain got to be uncontrollable even though I had no real symptoms of UC. I'm sure there were probably a few times in the past I should've gone but being the stubborn person I am just rode it out at home...probably not the wisest course of action in which I realize now.

My GI had the gall to ask me why I came into the hospital back in 08. First of all, I want to add, I was 63 yrs old, my blood pressure was 216/110. I had no control over my bowels for three days, bleeding and weakness.
You'll know when you need the hospital, believe me. Guess he realized it was necessary because I was in there for ten days!

Since my total colectomy with end ileostomy back in June of last year, I feel terrific. I also am through with that GI.

I was released from the hospital on 3/3/11 after a 6 day stay. My doctor did not ask me if I wanted to go, he just told me he needed to admit me. I was bleeding a lot and could not eat or drink anything without it just coming out in the form of diarrhea and blood. I don't even think I realized how sick I was. When I got to the hospital they said my heart rate was very high due to dehydration. I needed the IV steroids and IV fluids. Also my potassium became dangerously low and I needed alot of IV and oral potassium to get it back up to a safe level.

I got bumped into the hospital twice via seven visits to the ER. The first time, my white count was elevated and I was running a fever, severe diarrhea and couldn't keep up with my fluids. Second time, was a sneak in because a colonoscopy was being delayed and the ER doc was tired of seeing me undiagnosed so he bounced me back in. (Once you are in the hospital, you can get any test you need without waiting) I never was on IV Steroids because I didn't have a UC diagnosis at that point. When they put me on oral pred, it turned off the D like a faucet and I was bounced out of the hospital the next day.

You'll know when you need the hospital, things are out of control. There's always the emergency room if you're not sure and you know you need help immediately
