I got this little article about a phase II trial of a stem cell drug for UC and found a more in depth article on Forbes.

It looks very interesting, but I won't be able to read it until tonight. I wanted to go ahead and post it because it sounded so interesting.

OK I couldn't resist. Here's the part that jumped out at me if you don't have time to read the whole thing:

MultiStem is a patented and proprietary product consisting of a clinical grade preparation of non-embryonic stem cells obtained from bone marrow that have the potential to produce a range of factors and form multiple cell types. MultiStem appears to work through several mechanisms, but a primary mechanism appears to be the production of therapeutic proteins and other molecules produced in response to inflammation and tissue damage. Athersys believes that MultiStem represents a unique "off-the-shelf" stem cell product based on its apparent ability to be used without tissue matching or immunosuppression and its capacity for large scale production.

Interesting! My GP told me he had a patient who was in a stem cell drug trial and that it really worked on her UC!

Is this parochymal (sp)? Don't have time to read the article yet but this has been in the works for a while. It was ditched and then restarted. I hope it works out, but even if it doesn't there's no doubt in my mind that stem cells are the way of the future in terms of effectively treating (curing?) AI disease. If it wasn't for Bush, who knows where we would be now (sorry, had to say it, makes me so angry!)
