Imuran, stomach pain, nausea

I'm sorry to hear you're having such terrible side effects! I also just started azathioprine (generic imuran) but I haven't noticed any changes. Have you talked to your GI? I know a potential side effect of is acute pancreatitis. I think it usually takes longer than a couple of days to onset but you never know. Where is the pain exactly? Pain associated with pancreatitis would be in the mid to upper abdomen and possibly slightly toward the left side. Pancreatitis can be very serious so if your pains don't subside soon I would definitely go see your doc!

I never had any severe side effects like the ones you describe. 25mg is such a tiny dose - you would probably have to work your way up to 100 or 150mg to see results. Have you considered 6mp? You should discuss this with yoru GI. It doesn't sound like you're tolerating Imuran well.

Have you considered 6mp or methotrexate? Both of those are immunosupressants and are slightly different. Maybe you would have more luck with something other than imuran.

Call your GI asap. One year ago this week imuran landed me in the hospital...twice. I stopped counting when i vomited 20 times. I was at a much higher dose so you really must be sensitive. It will only get worse because it keeps building up in your system. Please don't take it again til you talk to your dr. I was so sick I was actually asking God to take me.

I did better with 6mp, but it affected my liver so I said bye bye to my colon and had my take down last Monday. Best decision I could have made.

She just started and she's at such a low dose so I think stopping it wouldn't make much difference, however, staying on it could be very detrimental to her health (believe me I know). Please let us know how you are doing and I really hope you got ahold of your GI so he/she can tell you to go off of it and figure out your next step.

Did you call your GI? I feel so bad for you. I never want to feel like I did when on imuran again. I am glad you are feeling better. That was the nice thing, when it's out, you feel better soon. My GI thought the first time it was the flu so he told me to stop for two days and try again. I did and was even sicker the second time...back to the hospital for two more days.

That's what happened to me at 5 weeks in and I had to stop to. One day without it and I felt so much better.

I experienced many side-effects with Imuran that I never want to experience again. I had everything from fatigue/nausea to skin rashes. I wouldn't wish some of those things on my worst enemies (not that I have any). Switching to 6MP yielded little difference and that makes sense because it's in the same class of medicine as the imuran.

If it's causing symptoms to the point where you are vomiting, you need to stop taking it and seek alternative treatments. For me, the symptoms/side-effects from the immunosuppressants were worse than the disease itself so I had to stop taking it at some point.

I'm so sorry you've been feeling so miserable, Boxermom! For some people, Imuran is just the right thing.
Gosh, isn't it maddening that the only way to find out if something is going to help or hurt is two try it.... from supplements to prescription meds.

Yes, I got all the very expensive tests done.

It's too bad because Imuran works so well for some people. Unfortunately for others it is poision.
