6mp, Elevated liver tests

After I developed antibody for Remicade, my GI started me on 6mp. I am currently on 6pm 50mg for 3 weeks. Blood work last Friday and I find out tonight that my AST is 42 and ALT is 197. Are these numbers normal? I mean, I know they are not...but should I be very concerned? Normal range for ALT is below 65 and mine is way way up. I am actually a little freaked. Thanks.

Have you talked to your GI yet about the blood test results?

Yes, those are elevated. I was told I needed to go off 6mp and have a liver ultrasound and then eventually a liver biopsy because they were worried about liver damage. After the liver biopsy (done at the same time as step 1 J-Pouch), I was told if I was going to have liver damage this was the kind to have. That was after being on 6mp for about 6 months or less.

I felt like I was at the end of the road and didn't want any more organs damaged so I opted for the j-pouch.

My liver tests were 6x normal on imuran then went down to 2x normal.  Not sure why, mabye I had a few cocktails before the test??  GI is monitoring me.

Thanks for the responses. I was told by my GI to take 6pm twice a day instead of once a day for the same dosage and blood work after 1 month. Hopefully the test result will look better by then.

I am actually thinking to take myself off the med and watch my diet very carefully to see how things are going. I am not sure if this can be done...but I am really tried of trying all the medicines and worry about the side effects.

Anyone here are totally off the med. to treat U.C.? Maybe I should start a new post or something....

Well, I also want to add, I am so happy to find this forum. I now totally feel like only people with this disease can understand me...Thanks!

ALT was in the same range. AST was in the 60's I believe. I would be surprised if they would go down for you, but I'm not a doctor so I don't know. My AST is now normal and my ALT is almost normal (actually those tests were a few months ago so they are probably normal now). For me it was frustrating because it was starting to work, but my gi felt it was too dangerous to stay on it. It was a blessing in disguise because after leaving his office in tears every time I saw him I decided enough was enough and had surgery. No more meds or pain.

I thought like you did and thought that going off my meds all of a sudden I would be fine. I was not. Good luck, I hope everything works out for you.

My GI has urged me to consider Imuran and says that Imuran will almost certainly raise LFTs in the first three months as the liver acclimates itself to the drug.  He claims that this will not cause any permanent damage. 

If LFTs remain elevated after that period:  1. If it's working, then monitor the LFTs in an attempt to find a happy balance or 2. If it's not working, discontinue the drug.
