Anyone stopped Imuran after taking for years?

Hello folks,

I have been taking Imuran since Aug 2008. Along with Imuran, I am taking Colazal as well and this combination is helping a lot. I am in remission. What I would like to know if I can reduce Imuran dose. I know I can not reduce Colazal. I have done that experiment once under my gastroenterologist's supervision and inflammation appeared in 5 days.

I would like to know if anyone out there on this BB that has taken Imuran for years and stopped later on. I just don't want to live under immuno-compromised situation.

My current medication is 150mg of Imuran and I am not using Salazopyrine anymore.

I was on Imuran for about 4 years and while taking it I still had a few mild flare-ups. While in remission I decided to stop taking it and remained in remission for about 1.5 years. Currently in a flare & not sure if the doctor will decide to put me back on it.  I know some meds lose their effectiveness the 2nd go-around, but I'm not sure if this is the case w/ Imuran or not.

I am in the processo of finding this out right now.  I have been on Imuran for the last 2.5 years.  I started on 200 mg and after about 6 months lowered my dosage to 150 mg.  No negative with that adjustment.  The 200 mg put me in remission and the 150 mg has kept me there.  I have added canasa rectal suppositories since I have a small patch of inflammation remaining in the rectum.  I have requested that I be allowed to drop the dosage to 100 mg.  My GI's initial reaction has been to keep me on the 150 mg dosage since I am doing so well on it but I have insisted on lowering the dosage to see if I can get off of it all together.  He has relented and he stated he has heard of others getting off Imuran and staying in remission with asa meds.  Hence the graduated decrease.  I am having a flex next month, if my rectum is clean he will lower to 100 mg.  I will let you know how it goes.

Hello,

I've been on Imuran now for at least 5 yrs but its not working for me anymore along with it I take Pentasa. I'm starting HYDROCORTISONE ENEMA tonight due to my flair up that I've been in for at least 6 months now. I will be starting Remicaid soon as well. Dont want to stay on meds if they dont work per my doctor. So now its time to start sometihng new but if the imuran is working for you dont stop it.

A few years ago, I started Imuran therapy with prednisone to induce remission and continued to stay on it for a while. When I got off it, I was still in remission. Apparently, it was the prenisone that put me into remission in the first place.
