I have some random gray hairs on my head and I've tried a few semi/demi permanent dyes and they never work.

Does anyone know of a product that will cover my gray that is not permanent? I don't really want to change my hair color, I'd prefer just to put something on the few grays that blends with the natural color. The grays tend to be shorter, they must be stubborn because the demi didn't cover them.

A lot of people say that but it's not cute when you have 20 grays poking out of your dark brown hair and you're in your early 30s... ;)

I tried this clariol "beautiful" professional line and it didn't do anything. It's as if I didn't even put dye in it. I also tried this stuff called Umberto which is a demi and it didn't cover. I think I need to buy a darker color that isn't an ash base but I don't want coppery hair.

Semi and demi permanent colours tend to be more transparent.
What level did you use?

Basically, the greys will be more "blended" rather than coloured solid.

I see that the Clairol Beautiful colour line also has an advanced coverage. This would have more direct pigment or double pigments in it.

What level of colour did you use, and what level is yours?

I tried Stage 1 and Stage 2 hair color (1 washes out in a specific number of washes, 10?, 2 is demi-permanent but faded quickly). I had to go to Stage 3 which of course is permanent.

I chose Clairol's Nice & Easy. Why? Because it's been around for decades and other varieties of hair color are often discontinued.

I started with medium golden brown but now use light golden brown.

Over 8 weeks time it does fade but the grey that was covered with hair color never returns to grey. If I see grey near the end of the 8 week period, it's new grey hair, not old. Sometimes for big events I color every 6 weeks. My hairdresser said I could color every 4 but that seems excessive to me.

Prior to coloring my own hair I had my hair dresser do it but he charged very high prices. Turns out, most hair dressers do (for color or highlighting, similar to perms).

I save a bundle by doing my own hair color.

I generally use Nice & Easy too- or Herbal Essences, whicehever is on sale really! I find that some gray hairs start to re-appear a week or so after coloring, so I just picked up some stuff at CVS, it's like mascara for your hair. Brush on the hairs, washes out. Why don't you want to go with a permanent color? I don't go lighter, no bleach involved, so for me, permanent is the only way to go. Otherwise I'd be dyeing my hair monthly. The perm only lasts about 6 weeks too.

My mom uses natural instincts. I've tried it but don't really like the color it gives. I also don't have an issue using permanent dyes, though.

If it's the bleaching part that bothers you, have you considered henna? Lush sells a bunch (caca rouge, caca brun, caca marron, and caca noir) which are 'permanent' but they're more of a stain...no bleach involved.

I recently made the switch to a non-permanent dye. I was dying my hair too much, and I felt the ingredients in permanent dye weren't healthy.

I'm now using HerbaShine from Garnier. I love it! The dye stays in longer than permanent dye. I know permanent dye is supposed to be permanent, but it's not on white hair.

I also use the color adder that looks like mascara but works better than mascara at covering any exposed white hair.

I used a color 5 and a color 6.

I don't think Henna is the best thing for me because I've heard it is quite permanent and it only colors red. I already have a bunch of red. I'd really like to stay around my normal color. My sister uses henna and she said she has to leave it in for over an hour for it to cover the gray.

the claroil beautiful did nothing at all. The demi helped but there were a few hairs that didn't color. I did that the demi in a 6 golden. I think I am going to try a level 5 natural. I hope it helps. I am so sick of these grays! If this doesn't work, I have something called vivitone and some developer and I will have to put it in my hair. I just don't really want to use perm dye becasue then I may have roots to worry about and I don't have that many grays. I am almost tempted to pull the 10 that bother me out.

Usually hennas are red, but Lush also has auburn, brown and black formulations.

Wow, that Henna looks pretty cool on the website. I don't know what I will do. I have to go back to the beauty supply store and see if they will give me my money back for the stuff that didn't work :)

Hi notsosicklygirl,

Why don't you try to find an Avon Rep. and order Advance Techniques color protection grey root touch-up for all hair types. It is only about $5.00 or so and you can cover the gray and it washes out when you shampoo your hair.

This should work well since you don't have too many gray hairs and you really don't want to color.

you can buy actual black henna hair color from an ethnic/indian food store. my mom used it for years and years to cover her gray ( we also have dark hair). it always worked great for her. but i think it can react with the metal-based hair color you get at the regular stores so you may want to wait a while before trying it.

I went to Sally yesterday and got another Demi dye. The girl said my hair is a shade 6 so I went with 6 with a a hint of red. I hope it covers these grays. I have to use this with a low level developer - I am more hopeful it will cover, the others didn't have a developer. I really don't want to darken my whole head just to cover a few grays. I know all these demis deposit color on top of your hair so I expect a slightly darker shade but I'd like to keep it as close to natural as possible to avoid too much maintenence. The demi washes out, if it looks good, maybe I will go for a permanent down the line.
