How do I go about finding another GI doc for a second opinion?

Since I'm not completely comfortable with the way my GI doc is handling my case, I thought maybe it would be a good idea to get a second opinion?

I got the recommendation for my current GI doc from my primary care doctor. Should I call the primary care doc and ask for another recommendation or should I just try searching on my own? I don't want it to get back to my current GI doc, that I'm seeking a second opinion.

I would look around on my own. You got the first referral from your primary and you don't love him/her, perhaps you would have better luck finding someone yourself. I always wonder why doctors refer who they refer. Do they get a kic-back or are they truly interested in finding you the best possible care? My GI told me if I wanted a 2nd opinion, she has a colleague who specializes in IBD. I trust my GI, I definitely think she is trying to look out for my best interest. She just doesn't specialize in IBD like some others. If I were you, I would look arund and see if there is an IBD center in your area and see if you can get a appointment with one of the GIs there. I haven't gotten a 2nd opinion but I may if I am not stayin stable. I also saw another GI for a while and her opinion was similar to my current GI.

I've researched several more opinions (third, forth, fifth....) for my son. It is your right to ask for a second opinion and any dr. worth their salt will not be offended and should even encourage you to do so. We are Kaiser patients, so we had to ask for referrals from our primary physician. However, I did call around to doctors from different hospitals and a couple of them did talk to me, though they were very clear that i would need to go through the formal channels if I wanted them to meet with my son in person.
I've found that every dr. has their own approach and literally everyone I spoke with had slightly different suggestions on how to treat my son. I think it's worth it to gather as much information as you can. Good luck.

you should be 110% comfortable with your Dr. Even if you are, a 2nd opinion is always good.

ratemd is good, but I've found that people, particularly online line to complain before praise when it comes to review.

call/look up on CCFA
call/look up via your medical insurance to cross reference

goto a CCFA support group meeting and ask others who their Dr is and if they are happy with them
