hii ive not had a drink since i had my first flare and diagnoses at the beginning of the year. im going on holiday to amsterdam on monday (week today) and i want to have a few drinks when im away, im only 21 n used to go out & get drunk, i miss it .

anywy im off work wednesday so should i try and have a few drinks on tues night and see how i go? im jut scared i bring back my symptoms again so close to my holiday then i cant go... so syould i wait till im there but if its bad I wouldnt want t get unwell in a foreign country...

should i be ok with travelling? and do u guys all take out insurance covering your pre exsisting condition i.e colitis, coz i got a quote and its £50 fr 4 days! im skint enough as it is!! will i be ok with normal insurance?

(Sorry, discussion of substances illegal in the US - even if not illegal in Amsterdam - not allowed on HW!)

Why do you bother to ask? Just go ahead and see the results for yourself. If you think it's not a good thing for you...don't do it.

My thoughts...if you have to ask, you already know the answer.

by the way, we cannot discuss illegal drugs on this forum, I suggest you delete it before admin does.

I am 21 as well, and honestly, it's never bothered me much. I make sure not to go on a bender and get smashed, but having a drink or two doesn't bother me. Try it out, see what happens that all you can do. I would take it easy though, and maybe have one small drink to see what happens.

i ask because id hoped people would reply with there experiences and maybe give ma bit of advice so i could get some enjoyment out of live!!

and 'if you have to ask your already know the aswer if you yad to say that to everyone we'd have no forum.

I don't "get drunk" but I do have a few glasses of wine with dinner on weekends. Unless I'm flaring badly, it doesn't affect my UC.

My advice would be to partake in moderation, if you are going to, and monitor yourself for reactions. And enjoy your travels! :-)

Im canadian, lived in Ireland and England and soon to be married to an englishman so I understand the good drinks!
I used to drink a lot and all sorts of alcool. However with uc you have to take it easy. But since you havent been drinking for a while a little will go a long way !! ah ah
ok heres what worked for me:
- drink it but dont mix it
-white wine over red
-vodka (why not mix it with juice)
-whiskey (I never understood why i handled it so well)
-gin tonic
-marguaritas

Avoid beers as it makes you gassy
Drink plenty of water
Have proper sleep
Have fun and dont go over the board.

We are all different. I can drink as much as i want with no issues. Other smell alcohol and go into a flare. You have to find out how it effects you for yourself.

When I was flaring alcohol was a problem with my gut, great unhappiness the next day (D mainly and urgency).
Now in remission white wine is OK. Red wine has always been a problem for my UC.
Clear distilled liquor is SCD legal but I don't do well with fruit juices (as a mixer) and dislike drinking pure liquor.
I tried making a mojito once using honey as sweetener...yukk.

I agree with suggestion to avoid beer.

This is just my opinion but you don't need alcohol to enjoy life. If your friends have an issue with it, then maybe you need to find more accepting friends. My personal experience tells me that people's IBD issues are usually exacerbated with alcohol. I'm 24 and haven't had a drink in years. It doesn't make my friends think any less of me. I still enjoy parties and most of all, I try to have a good time.

With that being said, if you plan to drink then I suggest you drink in moderation. Try a glass or two and see how it impacts you the next day.

I like being 'into it' and not 'out of it' but it took a long time to learn that. It used to be my relief from stressful life until it was adding back in way too much stress.

Just happy to be healthy now.

Booze suppresses the immune system but the gut does not like it much. I have never flared while drinking but I think the effect on the nerves after you stop is really bad for UC.

Booze has so much baggage with it. It is like pulling the lotto lever on where your going to end up after drinking, for me I like the certainty of not drinking. Hard to do when young, everyone is out at the bars and all the advertising links it to success,happiness and good times.

Funny how much a lie that is, talk to drunks and they have lost all 3 long ago.

my friends dont really have a problem with it, they just are used to me being out everyweekend and being a bit of a pisshead before all this. i have great friends thought who would accept it if i couldnt drink. its not abut them though its about me. i loved going out, ive been out twice now sober and its fun but not as fun, it was stress relief at the end of the week for me. i wet out friday there and went home as 11pm while my friends went out after , i missed out on all the drunken banter.

i know though that health is more important id a lot of you are porobles thinking stop moaning and get on with it crap happens but im just cared to try incase i hav to reseign to the rest of my life with no alchol, im happier not knowing for a while so hav preloinged it as oong as pos.

i was also robbed tonight at work so pretty shaken up, and let me tell u cld defo go a drink tonight! haha

I am not a big drinker by any means but I do like to have a couple drinks on the weekend. If you want to try it, perhaps just don't over do it. Don't slam the drinks but perhaps "nurse" them - just enough to get that glow. I found that the next day I have looser stool but it's tolerable, but when I am flaring, I really limit my alcohol intake because it just makes me miserable. I believe I have a problem with malt drinks, including hard liquor. But Vodka with pineapple juice doesn't normally bother me.

It's an individual thing. I think you are looking for the approval to drink from us - for us to say it will be fine. But we all react differently to these things and ultimately it is up to you.
