I noticed last year that my hair started thinning. I had always has thinner stranded hair but I had a lot of it. It sheds constantly now. I saw a dermatologist and they did bloodwork and there's nothing else wrong with me. They said I had telogen effluvium and it could be caused by virus or stress. Then of course, this year, I found out I had UP, which had probably started developing last year. I was wondering if there was a connection to UC and hair loss. Do any of you experience hair loss and have you found any treatments or shampoos that work? I'm tempted to try the Nioxin shampoos but I'm afraid. I worry it might be too harsh. The only medicine I'm on is Rowasa enemas. I'm not on birth control pills nor have I ever been on any other medication in my life. Should I try the Nioxin? Has anyone had a bad side effect or bad experience with the shampoo?

I dont know. I came off blood thinners in February and 3 months later I was shedding, this is the thinnest my hair has ever been. I was using Nizoral and Nioxin, then I tried minoxydil but it got worse on that side so i am back to just applying the Nioxin root stim and taking their supp with biotin.

It stopped and there is a lot of short hairs coming in but they look kind of like runts.

Still concerned.

Sulphasalazine, curcumin, the rest is fish oil and vitamins complexes.

You can try Biotin - 5mgs or 5000mcgs. This might help you grow your hair back and it is very gut friendly.

i've been losing my hair for awhile now. do you have open sores on your head as well? does the loss get worse when you're flaring? if so, there's a foam for the head called luxiq which is a steroid which heals the sores and will help slow the loss (since much of the loss can be caused by incessant scratching)

I don't have any open sores but throughout my entire life I've suffered from seborrhea dermatitis. I wonder if I'm allergic to something in regular shampoos like sodium laurel sulfate.

I do have the foam that I use on occasion for stubborn areas(like around my hairline). In general my scalp feels dry. I wonder if changing shampoos would help. I've looked up the Nioxin but am afraid to use it because I've read comments about some people whose hairless gets worse at first and they shed more. I don't want to take that chance.

Using 8000 but my liver numbers shot up so I stopped new stuff until that resolves.

I wouldn't say that seborrhea dermatitis is from allergy. Rather another one autoimmune disease. A few years a go, I was told that I have it too. I saw a dermatologist that time, and I got some Rx for the stuff to put on my sclap and it worked (sorry, but I don't remember the name). He also said, that I should go for antibiotics therapy, but as I was trying to get pregnant, we skipped that part. Still, I have it occasionally. Usually it gets better after I put some color on my hair. I think, all that chemical stuff in hair color just burns out the scalp inflammation for a while. Regularly, I use T-gel (from Neutrogena) like every second hair wash. So maybe you should see dermatologist for that? I know, that having UC makes everything worse and seeing just another doctor can be overwhelming. But you know, loosing hairs can be from seborrhea dermatitis too.

What is harsh is the monxydil it seemed to make the thinning worse on the right side so I went back to Nioxin now level 2 on both sides. I have the thin tiny restarts but I think that is a bad sign that the hair follicle is putting out runts, better than nothing but not good.

After my diagnosis of UC 2 years ago, which included a hospital stay, months of prednisone, antibiotics and the introduction of mesalamine pills, suppositories and enemas, I too started losing my hair. It would come out in handfuls when I washed it. It got very thin on top and I was very concerned. It finally stopped falling out after a few months and has grown back to it's normal thickness. The only drug I am not taking any longer is prednisone, so I concluded that it must have been the culprit or the stress of the illness itself caused the problem, or maybe both were factors. Anyway, that's my experience. Hope the information is helpful and good luck.

hi chrissy72... im actually a hairstylist and always recommend nioxin to my clients... i've been using it as well for years. none of my clients have had any problems like hair falling out more. they usually say they love the smell and like how the conditioner tingles on their scalp. another brand you could try is bosley. i've been losing my hair due to my meds and now i just switch between nioxin and bosley... i would suggest to get the trial sizes of both and see which one u like better...
another product u can look up is called nutriol from nuskin, this one is a topical treatment (use it after u get out of the shower and leave in) it's kinda like liquid vitamins for your scalp. hope this helps!
