I would love to take a poll of UC and smoking! How many of my fellow UC sufferers where previous smokers before being diagnosed with UC and how many were non-smokers?? I myself smoked prior to developing Colitis. I was diagnosed with UC about
8 months after I quit.

I was a smoker when diagnosed. I quit while I was pregnant with my son, flared about
6 months later and started smoking again. So I don't if in my case, if it was the stopping or the hormones from child birth.

I was a social smoker in college but now I rarely ever smoke. I may have one cigarette in a month or less.

Every time I have quit smoking, I flared. My last flare was sixteen months, I started smoking again and was in 90% remission after about
ten days. Coincidence????

Diagnosed with UP 2006 and was a smoker, was on Asacol for about
3 months, kinda lax in taking it though but seemed to have gone into remission and was meds/symptoms free until got pregnant with my 2nd child (oct 2008). Quit smoking for 2nd pregnancy (although I quit for my 1st one too...?) and I started to flare but was pretty controlled with Asacol.
Started smoking again after that birth ( i know, i know...) then quit...again...Sept 2010. Hospitalized Oct 2010 with severe flare: UC of the Descending Colon and rectum... and have been flaring ever since. Just had another colonoscopy 6/1...I now have pancolitis :-/
I'm smoking again....

i'm like bananagirl, not a smoker but was around 2nd hand smoke most of my childhood - I know this sounds weird but i occationally wake up craving a cigarette - if there were smokes in the house I swear I'd lite up!!!! especially if i've been around smokers again as an adult.

Never smoked ever prior to UC... did try nicotine patches and smoking once I had UC but it didnt help at all so I quit that experiment.

I was a social smoker in college and beyond, pretty much when we drank, we smoked. Outside of drinking, I never smoke.
I quit of course when I was pregnant both times prior. But UC didn't show as a result of that. For me, it was antibiotics that did it.
I have not noticed a strong correlation for myself between smoking and remissions/improvements of UC, but we do have e-cigs now. I imagine once the baby is born, I'll go back to it, but I don't think I will go back to actually smoking.
I had started buying the non-nicotine cartridges for it before I got pregnant this time around, and didn't see any change in my UC.

Not a smoker at all beforehand. Very curious about
the nicotine /UC connection.
