Getting a doctor to prescribe LDN, specifically in Austin.

I am very interested in trying LDN to help with my colitis, as I cannot tolerate 5ASA/mesalamine, and need to stop defaulting to prednisone. My GI is very buttoned down and it took him a long time to accept that I could not tolerate 5ASA drugs. Does anyone have any tips on convincing a GI to try this therapy, and does anyone specifically know of a doctor in Austin, TX that has any experience with this?

There is a woman who will give you a list for your area. You can find her info here.

My GI will not consider letting me try LDN. She says there have been no studies that show it to be effective. I've seen a lot of people here having success with it so I don't care if there are studies. If it's helping a good number of users, it must help some people with UC. It's not harmful, I don't see why not let people try what they want to try?

Thanks diaper. I did show my GI links to a couple studies but I am not sure if she even bothered to look at them becuase she still claims it is a "last ditch" idea. I disagree but I will have to see a different doctor to get it, she will not change her mind nor does she have time to research LDN, unfortunately it is not her area of interest.

She did say there were limited positive findings for Chron's but none for UC. Maybe if I had Chron's she would consider it but it's doubtful.

Just out of interest, can anyone that can get this either tabs or cream or even both post it over to me? I'll pay for it + p&p via paypal? Just don't think my doctor here in UK is going to give me it.

tank: it is prescription medication. Usually a doctor will only prescribe the amount that you need and you wouldn't have any extra to ship to someone else. It is also illegal and against the board rules to trade, buy or sell medication. Sorry.

InSo, I have wanted to try LDN for years. I just haven't had the opportunity. If i can get in to see the doctor that is ccovered by my insurance who uses it, I will give it a try.

Does anybody now of compounding pharmacy in Texas. My doctor is licenses in Texas only.

As for compounding pharmacies in Texas, there is People's Pharmacy in Austin on Lamar. Not sure if they have any experience compounding naltrexone.

If you get the script for it, you can fax it to Skip's - he ships all over the world.

Do you know which type of LDN you got, i.e. with which filler for oral, or the transdermal cream?

Yes, sadly most doctors don't even want to see the data on LDN.

And sadly, he commented that essentially all of these "alternative" treatments were based on the placebo effect and that on almost any study for colitis remission occurs in 40% of the patients no matter what it is.

I have found a doctor in Austin that supposedly prescribes LDN, it is some type of alternative doctor that does not accept insurance and wants to charge $300 for an initial 1-hour consultation. Does anyone think this is worth it? It is either trying this and hoping they will prescribe the LDN or I'll be taking 6MP.

neekap, you have to use your best judgement. I am not sure whether I would pay $300. Did you get the list of doctors in your area? There weren't any that accept insurance? There was one on the list from my area that accepts insurance but I didn't end up going to see him, I am going to hope for good results with 6mp but I will keep this in the back of my mind if I start to flare up. I have heard that LDN is more successful with Chron's than UC but the results may not be accurate because it's not being used a lot for UC - no one can predict whether you will see benefits.

Why don't you want to try 6mp?

Glad you found a doctor, although he sounds a little high priced. The alternative doctor I went to who was an osteopath charged me $180. for the initial consultation which took 1 hour. Was it worth it?

To me, yes - and although I don't have the money, I would have paid $300 if I would have needed to. I'm so glad I'm on LDN, and  didn't go on 6mp or Remicade like my GI wanted.

Perhaps you need to check if there is another LDN prescribing doctor from the list you were given?

My advice: try LDN. But ultimately, that's your call to make.

I will check around to see if there is a cheaper doctor in my area, $300 is a little too high. Main reasons for not wanting to use 6mp is the monthly cost is high on my insurance and the greater apparent possibility of negative side effects as compared to LDN.

It is interesting, as from what I understand 6mp works to suppress the immune system, while LDN has the opposite effect. I think it is worth it to try the LDN first, since it would hopefully have an effect sooner and would be cheaper.

InSoFla--I have emailed my doctor but have not heard anything from him yet. He said that he would right a prescription and to find compound pharmacy but I have not heard back from him. Will see. Thanks for asking.

neekap, whatever happened with your doctor prescribing LDN? Did you find another reasonable one out there? What's your status?

I should be receiving my LDN in the mail next week.  Will see what happens. Nothing has worked so far.
