Combo Antibiotic treatment - PART I

Today is my 6th day on the combo theraphy. I had 3 fully formed stools today, no bleeding, no mucus and no smell but no real urgency

I had flu like symptoms today but I think that that may be due to 'bacteria die-off'. This therapy is a miracle to me

I have completed one week of this combo therapy and one more week to go

I had 2 fully formed stools today, no blood and no mucus both in the morning when I woke up

I felt very nauseas today and also very tired and weak. I think that it has something to do with 'bactria dieoff'

I am so sorry for you that this treatment has not worked for you. Some people who did this treatment only started to see benefits 6 months later. Sometimes you colon is in such a bad condition that it needs time to heal.

I had 2 fully formed stools today with no urgency but again I was very tired. I don't know whats causing tiredness.

I experimented a little by drinking half a glass of fresh orange juice today and it did not have an effect on me, usually orange juice would immediately make me flare. I will slowly start experimenting with foods that make me flare

The combo antibiotic is meant to destroy the fusobacteria. This bacteria releases butyric acid which causes ulceroinflammatory lesions.

In addition to the combo antibiotics I am also drinking half a glass of water with a teaspoon of bicarbonate soda to neutralise this butyric acid.

Our colons have been damaged and need to be repaired and for this I am taking a combination of vitamin E and selenium to heal my colon. Supplementation of vitamin E + selenium significantly reduces the severity of colonic lesions . See link below

You can buy bicarbonate soda from your local groceries store. It's usually in the baking department but don't confuse it with baking soda.

Most health stores stock a combination of selenium and vitamin e. I use a product called SeleniVite.

I had one normal bowel movement today and more energy than yesterday

I forgot to mention, NO-ONE in our immediate family has UC or Crohn's!! My grandmother was diagnosed with Crohn's about 5 years ago, but other than that, no-one else on either side of family has it. Just thought that was interesting.

Thank you, and I too hope that we can figure this thing out! I have tried to get him to read the information that I research, but he wants nothing to do with it. I try not to ask too many questions or nag him about it, but we do need to know if things are improving. I feel they are getting better, because I don't see him doubled over in pain anymore, so that is a good sign. I am not convinced that UC is hereditary at all, and have always felt that it is more about a certain strand of bacteria, or even parasite. Before my son had his colonoscopy, his GI doctor gave him a ten day course of Flagyl, and it didn't seem to make much of a difference, but then again maybe he needed the combination of antibiotics and for a much longer duration. I do remember that he used to have very, very foul smelling gas, and that seemed to get a lot better after the antibiotics.

This whole ordeal started in October of 2010, when he noticed a lot of blood in his stool. The E.R. doctor felt that maybe he did have a parasite, although stool cultures were negative. So, he put him on the standard medication to kill the parasite. My son told me that he saw the thread like worms in his stool, after taking the medicine, so I felt confident that we had found the problem and fixed it. Then in Feb. 2011, the symptoms started to return, diarrhea, gas, pain, bleeding. That's when we went to a specialist and starting testing. Thank God that I didn't listen to his primary care doctor and I insisted that she refer us out to a GI specialist. I am trying to educate myself as much as possible and hopefully prevent/limit future flare ups for him.

I honestly think this has affected me more than it has him. I worry about him a lot. I know there are people that are always worse off than we are and I feel truly blessed, but it does worry me, especially since I know that he doesn't take his medicine regularly and pays no mind to what he eats.

Today is my 12th day on this combo antibiotic therapy and I feel like I am cured. Normal stools , 1 bowel movement a day and no urgencies. I have never felt better in my 17 years of UC

For the last 12 months no meds were working for me and I was seriously considering surgery. I did this antibiotic therapy as a last resort. I have a appointment with my docor tomorrow and I will get his opinion if I need to go on medications again.

I am from South Africa and 17 years ago I was working for a Canadian company in South Africa and they sent me to Vancouver to help on a project that was behind schedule. Whern I returned home after the project , I started getting about 20 bowel movements a day. I was given immodium by my doctor and after that my bowel movement lessened but I started bleeding heavily. I visited a American Gastro who did a colonoscopy on me and I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. I think that I contracted by 'colitis bug' in Canada

Initially my ulcers were mainly at the rectum but over the years it spread up the colon

I started with salazopyrine and cortisone foam enemas. It helped calm my colitis but after a while it did not help anymore. I went on pred but it made me very sick and I went off it very quickly. Vitamin E enemas helped me initially but after a while they also stopped working

Today I felt like I felt before I had UC. I am keeping my finger crossed that fusobateria was the cause of my UC and the antibiotics have got rid of it and my UC may never return again

Wow, what a coincidence. I came down with UC while living in Vancouver too. I'll have to check into the possibility of trying antibiotics.

Im on co-amoxaclav. I've been on it for a year now but I just use it for my skin to stop me getting spots lol.

It's been a week and two days off my antibiotics and I'm feeling much, much, much better! I'm not going to the bathroom much in the morning like I use to. I use  to go back and forth for over two hours in the morning in gut wrenching pain and now I go twice and I'm done for the day. I take probiotics at night and before bed I take a teaspoon of physllium powder mixed in water before bed. The last two days have been awesome and hardly any blood and my inflammation in my rectum is no there from what I can feel. My blood work came back, no more anemia too. I would do this again if needed, it's been the best thing so far for my UC. Please don't rule out that it's bacteria in the bowel or gut that's causing your symptoms. I'm MUCH better. I hardly every have any gas, nothing uncomfortable or passing. My bf has terrible stenchy gas and has gut problems all day long, lots of bloating, I remember when I was like before my UC was dx. I wish I knew someone who could have helped me back then even with telling me about probiotics! We live and learn and hopefully can help others. I'll keep you posted on how things progress.
