annoying enema side effect

Hi there! So I started using the steroid enemas again, about 2-3x a week, just to make a dent in the never-ending bleeding. And as fas as that goes, they do help. BUT- I find the enemas have a laxative effect, I can generally retain one all night, but jeez..... the next morning, it's as if I did a mini-scope prep! I don't know if it's due to the increased volume in the colon, the increased liquid, or what. Does anyone else have this happen, either with Rowasa enemas, or steroid enemas? And does the same thing happen with suppositories?

Eva, I don't usually go a lot in the morning unless I am flaring to some extent. When I am feeling OK and use a Rowasa enema, I usually notice my first movement after has a lot of enema substance on it and in the toilet. If go again, it's normal. Suppositories are less white/substance with the first BM. I have not tried steroid enemas but I have used foam and it is much different consistency and doesn't leave white, it kind of dissolves. I haven't used them in a while so it's hard for me to remember. If I am going repeatedly in the morning, it's a sign of inflammation. You could use suppositories and enemas. I've been using Canasa/Rowasa for the past few days because I don't feel great :(

I did have increased bms initially with the rowasa. I'm not sure about the steroids as I have always been so inflammed when taking them I was going several times in the am anyway. I have taken a few steroid Es lately to try to curb some bleeding, too, but I haven't noticed this. They seem to be absorbed more; the rowasa always comes back out to some extent.

Right, the Rowasa enemas are definitely noticeable on the stool, & in the toilet. The steroid enemas aren't, you don't really see any medicine. So I'm guessing/hoping it's getting absorbed! The steroid enemas tend to have more of a laxative effect then the Rowasas, not sure why. Sorry you're not feeling well, notsosicklygirl- I empathize! I have a scope scheduled in August, & I'm really curious as to what it'll show. Some days are pretty good, others it's like "Bring on the IV steroids ASAP!". Mornings have always been my busiest time, bathroom wise, flaring or not. If things haven't settled down by noon, then I know I'm really in trouble.

FYI Mesamine enemas have shown to be just as effective as steroid enemas and they have less potential side effects. Make sure you squeeze all the air out of the bottle first. I think the morning urgency is typical when there is inflamation present.

No, not with steroid retention enemas. They would absorb completely overnight. Could it be that your mucosa is in a different state due to Humira or UC wear/tear & that in turn makes the enema function differently than it used to? I think that's why meds suddenly quit working for us; there is ongoing tissue change over time whether we are flaring steadily or not. / Old Hat (30 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)
