great news!!!!!!! are you having any joint or muscle pain? I was on it for 4 years and got off June 9th.

Good news. Have you given any thought to adding rectal meds as maintenance to make sure you can stay in remission? It'a easier on the system than the oral asacol. Just a thought...

Initially I didnt understand the side effects of the Prednisone and didnt have insurance so I was prescribed Prednisone and Sulfasalazine in high doses from a GI who runs his practice with a lot of cash patients. After a few years I figured out that he didnt care for my health as much as he did for the cash. His office literally looked like DMV with 2 hr lines and probably still does.

Thats when I decided to start researching and found out I could qualify for health insurance through the state and the underlying side effects related with longterm Prednisone use. Once you've been on Prednisone so long, its pretty hard to ween yourself off in the normal manner. Through trial and error Im where I am now. I know it was bad for me to stay on Prednisone for so long but I needed to work and without it, I would be homeless and in pain.

Ive had a ton of side effects that I think are due to the long term Prednisone use but I cant be sure if thats the only culprit. It could also be from having UC for so long plus all the other medication. The physical stuff you can negate with exercise. The internal stuff GH can help with a bit (still trying to get a script for it). The mental stuff is what worries me though. The depression and self esteem stuff seems to be hard to get rid of, atleast for me.

I've tried rectal meds before but I was unable to retain the enema. I'll give it another shot. I bought a bulb and bottle of vitamin E to try out a while ago and still havent opened the package. I'll try it with that and if I can retain it, Ill give the rectal meds a shot.

That is amazing to get off steroids after so many years. I have been on steroids for over a year, oral for about 5 months, then enemas.

I recently had tapered down to one hydrocortisone enema every second day, and was doing fine. Then, we had a stomach bug come through our house and my symptoms went nuts. Every other family member was fine after a day or two, but not me.

I'm back up to two steroid enemas/day :-( how frustrating!!!! I hate this &^%$ disease.

I can definitely relate to that. The diarhea bit is very annoying especially when you have a job thats active. This time around I took the taper very very slowly and added homemade yogurt (probiotics) to the mix regularly. I did have a week or two of loose stool/semi diarhea at times but I stuck to my guns. Its taken me about a year to taper down from 20mg to where I am now.
