so after months of cycling through antibiotics and scopes, with myself being sure he had an infection and the GI saying it was likely Crohns, we have finally concluded that he has/had pouchitis (geeze, how simple could that have been). He came off of Flagyl two days ago and has been having the best poops he's EVER had in his entire life. couple of times a day, fully formed, no leaks!!! we cheered and screamed and had a potty party after his first good BM. he was so proud. I sure hope it lasts...

That's great! Pouchitis can be a pest but it's no where near what dealing with UC is like.  A round of antibiotics and it's gone. Hopefully he will be A-okay from here on out!

What awesome news that the pouchitis has been dealt with and that you'll know in the future how to intervene quickly.

I am so happy for you and Chris!! How exciting!! I hope he has a long future of perfect poops, he deserves it after all he's been through. :)

I am so glad he is doing so well.  I have been thinking of you, haven't seen any posts from you lately.  I forgot, did he have his surgery in 1 step.  How long has it been since his surgery?  How many times is he going to the bathroom in a day?  Have you found  anything that helps with his pouch? So for so many questions. I am new to this and just looking for anything that will help.  Thanks

worriedmom, he had his surgery in one step last november. he does not have a jpouch exactly. in young children a surgeon can pull the small intestine down and connect it directly to the rectal cuff. it stretches a bit in the process and developes and adapts it's own pouch. while he was having pouchitis he was having 6-8 liquidy bm's in 24 hours with lots of small leaks. currently he's having 2-4 mostly formed with no leaks. he takes vsl#3.

there's not much better than a good poop. it's kinda like winning the lottery.

it's funny though, with all the hard times and let downs he's had, i'm a little nervous about thinking we've finally conquered this.

i know its so hard to let your guard down. we will forever be the poop inspectors!!

Great news and what a relief!

We have not gone the pouchitis route yet...just wondering if Chris had pain as well? I have been told that you feel REALLY crappy (abdominal cramps etc) when you have pouchitis??

he had no pain, just D and lots of seepage. not much appetite either. had some blood and inflammation from the chronic irritation. and his scopes looked more like infection than ulcers...

it's been 5 days and so far so good. predominantly formed, no seepage, only a leak or two when he ate not enough fiber or tries to hold it too long.

off all medications except VSL, multivitamin, and extra sodium and fiber. he now has a voracious appetite.

i'm a little less nervous about sending him to school in a few weeks. most of his movements happen in the evening now and long as he's not leaking during the day he shouldn't have any problems with it at school. i did get the GI to write a note stating that he should have unrestricted bathroom access while at school, and i'll arrange for him to have extra clothing in his backpack and the nurses office.

i want to thank ya'll again for all the support and guidance we've recieved here over the last few years. ya'll are awesome!

Wonderful news Veronica. May Chris have a wonderfully 'normal' life. remember that probiotics have been proven to help rid pouchitis! Go Chris!!
