I see so many contrasting responses about
diet and supplements etc. and body temperature. Having had introductory training into Chinese medicine, extensive training in Ayurvedic Medicine along with other energy medicine alternative therapies, I can offer these insights.
-Wheat and dairy are triggers for immune system responses in the gut including alter gut flora somewhat. Try to stick to the as natural as possible rule. Eliminate/reduce anything processed, canned, frozen and anything that did not come from the ground (preferably locally to your area) or fresh from the source. Avoiding Cheese and other processed foods which tax the GI system is probably a good idea.
-rice and lentils cooked together (not beans) in India, traditionally using spices like turmeric, cumin, etc. have been used as convalescent's meal while the gut heals (look up recipes for kitchadi/kitchari).
-probiotics are helpful although not always. VSL # 3 Prescription formula worked for a while and then it created issues as well.
- Liver/Gallbladder and Hypothalamus/Pituitary/Adrenals feedback loop are all involved in body temperature.
-Most of us with U.C. have higher than normal body temperatures consistently. The goal is to eat cooling foods and avoid heating substances such as caffeine, chocolate, bran, wheat etc. Avocadoes, soups, broths, well cooked rice, avoiding too much fats, butter (ghee -clarified butter is excellent) where as butter mass produced in the stores is not good. Use healthy oils and healthy eating choices- I know how carb/protein or sweets deprived we all feel sometimes.
It schallenging to respond to our symptoms I realize but the holistic approach to the mind-body-spirit relationship is critical in such auto-immune response illnesses. The average trained MD /internist has been trained only to match symptoms to a chemical bank of pharmaceuticals. Find yourself another doctor who is open-minded to other forms of therapies including acupuncture, fascial release etc. etc. - The list is endless, be wise, discerning on your practitioners and you will feel the difference. I am not"cured" but these things along with a lot of personal work has helped my quality of life a lot.
