I was having a hard time posting so I switched to chrome, maybe this will work...

Newly diagnosed with UC, on 40mg Pred, been on Lialda 6 days at 4 pills (1.2g)

How long until the Lialda starts to work, and how will I know if its making me worse? GI says some get worse on it, and I've had Bloody D 3x in the last 24 hours with cramping. But I'm so new to UC I don't know if this is normal flare type stuff or if I need another med. Previously in the last 2 weeks I've only had bloody D once, and I'm supposed to taper off 10g of prednisone tomorrow but am scared because its helped so much.

Do I just need to be patient? There is so much I don't understand yet about this disease....

Lialda can take a few weeks to help.  Yes, it also can make symptoms worse.  There is a lot of trial and error with this disease.  It is difficult to know if the flare is causing the symptoms to worsen or if the medicine is causing it.  Your symptoms are very normal for a flare so it is most likely the flare and not the Lialda.  How long have you been on the pred?  My doctor did not have me taper off until I was symptom free.

Welcome to the forum! Sorry to hear your having so much trouble right now. I think your symptoms are just part of the flare.. I too was diagnosed and put on 4 Lialda a day. I didn't really see huge improvement until I started the natural supplements along with the Lialda. The lily of the desert aloe juice was a big help and recently added l-glutamine powder and WOW the difference a few months has made!
You will find alot of useful information on this forum, when I first got on here I spent days reading old posts and educating myself on this UC stuff.
You might want to add a signature that lists your diagnosis( IE: left-sided, mild or moderate or severe...) and current meds and supplements so when you post questions and such others will know more about your situation.
Also, what were your symptoms that led up to your diagnosis? And when was your scope done?

lialda made my symptoms so much worse. i was on it for a month and my bleeding increased a lot, i got rashes all over my face and hands, and i went from 3-4 bathroom trips a day to 20 trips. they did a scope afterwards, too, and found that my u.c. had traveled up my colon.

every drug affects people differently though so i hope it can help you.

Medications like Lialda can take between 4-6 weeks and sometimes longer to really show their true colors. At this point, you just gotta wait and see sadly. I wish it were instant...I'm on the same dosage, and honestly, it took me around 4 weeks (possibly a little longer) when I first started to see significant results.

Thank you all so much for your feedback - this diagnosis and trying to understand it makes me feel like I'm just drifting along aimlessly!

Pre-Diagnosis: Bloody D once before, in March - but I've always had GI issues. I also have kidney cysts and my Dr's used to tell me my pain was from them rupturing, but now I know that pain is actually my colon, so inflamed!

Right before I got hospitalized I had a head cold, the post-nasal drip gave me D, and it just kept going.

I will have to be patient - I've been reading a lot on here and have ordered some probiotics and cats claw, and started taking omega 3-6-9.

I travel for work 3+ weekends a month and am trying so hard to get this under control, who wants to use an airplane loo?

Diagnosed after hospitalization and colonoscopy on 8/15/11, on 40mg prednisone and 4.8g Lialda, due to taper down to 30mg prednisone tomorrow, then drop by 10mg every week.
