Since the pan colitis diagnosis in Feb. 2010, my 19 year old daughter has given up all carbonated beverages, all caffeine-containing beverages, any diet drink mix with artificial sweeteners, tries to avoid high fructose corn syrup and tries to avoid the sweeteners like sorbitol, mannitol, etc.

Has anyone found any sports drinks, flavored waters, etc that are low in calories,(trying to lose the prednisone weight) and won't increase chance of diarrhea from the sweeteners but have some flavor?

We did start buying pure carrot juice, but regular fruit juices are pretty dense in calories. Any other ideas?

I drink just about anything. I used to avoid corn syrup and artificial sweetners, coffee, caffeine... Since feeling better, I find that food doesn't upset my symptoms. It is different for each individual but for me, I think while flaring, I have to eat as little as possible because the aftermatch of eating can be too drastic. I used to be very particular about what I ate and drank, lately, I feel like I am stable and I can eat as I like. I am thinking when I was concerned, my condition probably wasn't too stable. Funny thing is, my condition became stable for absolutely no scientific reason.

I don't drink anything with artificial sweetners, because they gave me diarrhea, even in my pre-UC days. Other than that, I drink just about everything. I have a cup (standard size, not huge) or two of coffee in the mornings, a glass of skim milk with breakfast, and then pretty much water through the rest of the day. I'll occasionally have a Coke/Pepsi in the mid-afternoon. I also frequently will have a club soda with a squeeze of lime in the evening...I like the bubbles and it's calorie-free, with no artificial crap.

I also am pretty much unaffected by food or drink. I do avoid sorbitol, which can cause diarrhea in people who don't even have IBD. If your daughter likes fruit juice, try diluting them by half with water. It not cuts both the fiber and the sugar by half, and also the calories.

One cup of coffee in the morning. I'll have tea on occasion. Other than that, I drink water and Crystal Light

Water, sometimes a little bit of half-decaf coffee, and very rarely some tea.

Water, sparkling water, tea, smoothies made with yogurt & banana. I use lactose free milk and Nestle's Quik if I want a treat. Home-made lemonade (sugar, water, lemon) for a really special treat.

I'm personally fond of lemon or lime water. Lemons and limes are usually acidic but when dropped in water, it lowers the acidity content.

I drink water, coffee (with milk or cream, with or without sugar), tea on occasion.

Rarely I drink a glass of milk or soft drink.

Never artificial sweeteners in anything I drink.

What about smart water(plain water with electrolytes for dehydration) with lemon or lime added for flavor? Isn't there a low calorie Gatorade now? I guess that is likely to have artificial sweeteners in in though..a trip to a Whole Foods, if there is one close to you, might be in order for more options.

I don't drink much of this myself, because I just don't care for the taste. But my husband likes it a lot. He likes the taste of sports drinks, and I don't... so maybe that's why I don't like it.

Anyway, it is sweetened with stevia and you add one packet to a liter of water so it's a good price.
no sugar, no artificial sweeteners, no calories.

Water, 1/2 cup of diluted juice per day, coffee with almond milk and bit of sugar and sometimes tea or iced tea.

No artificial sweetners or stevia or the like.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will look into the Alacer Electro mix and suggest she try the diluted juices. It seems so many of the flavored waters use acesulfame potassium/acesulfame K and I don't know if that is pro-inflammatory or pro Diarrhea.

She is almost done weaning off the prednisone (5mg every other day) and giving a final try at the higher doses of Imuran and Remicade. If she flares again, the doctor wants her to go ahead with surgery. She is trying to be extra cautious not knowing if certain sweeteners could tip the balance.

I myself drink alot of water.

However I've heard great things about coconut water - being nutritious and also helpful to some with IBD.

I am highly intolerant of anything coconut, so I cannot drink it.

i am addicted to coconut water and coconut juice. i mostly drink it so i can get extra calories, but i'm trying to gain weight. the bottles still don't have a lot in them though (the water is maybe 50-70 cals and the juice has 150 cals i think). i also make a lot of almond mylk and fruit juices at home. it's so much cheaper than buying and they don't have any fillers.

I third the coconut water!! it is sooo good for you! there are a few brands that have other fruit flavors mixed in to for some variety. And you can get them at almost any grocery store and even some gas stations! Coconut has lots of potassium to give you energy, but no unnatural sweeteners or added sugar. I would avoid all sports drinks and flavored waters. They are not healthy. NONE of them, especially the low calories ones. They are basically sugar water, or artificial sweetener water. And really drinking plain old water is best. I honestly drink maybe 5 drinks per month that aren't water. And the dense calories from fruit juice aren't that bad, as long as the juice is pure and not loaded with extra sugar. Its no different from just eating the fruit. Try the coconut water though!

I drink water more than anything....chamomile tea and on occassion, fresh squeezed orange juice and coconut juice/water.

I have found two things recently that are good to drink and the sweeting is low calorie and good for you. One is at Walmart and is the store brand. Its sweetened with Stevia and does not have a funny aftertaste... The other is call Mio and its similar to the walmart brand but its concentrated you just squirt it into water.

Yeah - I cut all that out.

I drink purified water with Ultima Replenisher Electrolyte powder by the tub. I bought 2 flavors today.

I am able to drink some coffee and lots of pre-workout energy drinks.

13 months since flare.

I mainly drink bottled Evian water, which can be found in larger chain stores + some gourmet markets. My 1st gastro advised me to drink bottled water to avoid sediment from aging city pipes! Citrus is not a best friend-- so I limit o.j. to 4 oz. daily, but I can tolerate the type containing pulp. I also use nonfat or lowfat lactose-free milk daily and, occasionally, vanilla soy milk. Rarely drink tea or coffee, but if it's the latter I absolutely need decaf! In hot weather I indulge in small cups of Nantucket Nectar pomegranate-cherry juice. It has some filtered water + apple & pear juice blended in so it's not a full-strength juice; to me it seems refreshing. I avoid anything carbonated because that stuff irritates my GI tract. Apple juice no longer appeals to me as I associate it with c-scope preps! Rarely, though, I drink some Martinelli a.j. because it is additive-free-- including vit C-free. Best wishes to your daughter for tapering off Pred, etc. / Old Hat (30 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

Im not against HFCS and it does not bother me when things have it in it.  The Mio actually contains sucralose and the Walmart brand drink has Cane Syrup Solids which is similar to the HFCS is not the same thing.... I just posted two things that I have found that work for me and I actually like the taste of. Everyone is different and has different nutritional goals in their life.

water and green tea. Green tea calms my colon like no other - not sure why maybe selenium or its anti inflammatory properties

i only drink bottled water and occassionally tea. would gatorade be an option? i have drank that in the past. i hope she gets better soon.

I drink Chai. Ginger is very anti-inflammatory. I make my Chai with ginger, cardamon, cloves, cinnamon, fennel, black pepper, and bay leaves. I don't use tea leaves most of the time although I will buy Starbucks Chai (Starbucks no longer adds HFCS). Chai is really easy to make. Just put all spices in a big tea bag, boil for awhile, and then simmer. You can find many Chai recipes on the Internet. I make a big pot of it in the morning and drink it throughout the day. I'll add quite a bit of organic low-fat milk when I'm in remission. I don't add sugar.

I haven't had soda in so long that I don't like it. The taste is strange, the texture makes my teeth feel weird, and the bubbles give me gas.

I would drink juice, but I'm fructose intolerant.

Other than Chai, I drink water.
