What else can cause bleeding in a 16 year old????

I am getting worried. My 16 year old daughter has been having sporadic D for a little while but I pretty much blamed it on her diet. She doesn't eat the healthiest (though I do nag her about eating more fruits and veggies). She had some gut pain on the left and right side yesterday and the day before. Tonight she went to the bathroom with D again and came out and asked me what it meant to have a lot of blood in the toilet - bright red blood. She flushed it before I had a chance to see.

Please can someone tell me of other possible reasons why she would have bleeding besides from developing UC?????? I am trying not to freak out because I know there can be other explanations but seeing since I have Uc and my mother had Crohn's, I am getting a bit nervous.

I pretty much told her to let me see if she has bleeding next time and to let me know how often she has D. She's a bit worried about it too.

ah i'd be worried, too. red. my younger sister has been getting a lot of diarrhea this past year and i just don't know what i'd do if she had U.C. too. i couldn't let her go through all the horrible stuff that i've dealt with.

when i was 17, that's when i first had my bleeding and my diagnosis was proctitis. none of the enemas helped but i changed to a vegetarian diet and was in remission for 4 lucky years.

I'm not going to lie, I'd be worried.

That said, it could definitely be internal hemmies and I really hope that's what it is!

Sherry...does she have her period at this time?

I think considering her symptoms, it's best to get your doc to do a c-scope. At least it can be ruled out or caught early.

sucks to hear, for sure, but it's really good she told you.

Can 16 year olds even get hemmies??

Should I just wait to see if it happens again before taking her to the doc? Make an appt soon? That is the only thing I hate about parenthood! lol The should I or shouldn't I's??!!

She is at the tail end of her period. She claims that she thought at first it was blood from that but she hasn't had heavy bleeding seeing since it's the end of her period. She DID get her Depo-vera injection last Monday so perhaps that had something to do with it. I will ask her about it tomorrow.

This 16 year old had hemmies! If it's bright red, maybe that's all it is.

If she's at the tail end of her period, there wouldn't be that much blood in the toilet, especially if not much on a pad or tampon.

I'was thinking...possibly endo?
but i'd lean towards UC considering her family history.

ABSOLUTELY...call your doc and get her in asap.

better than waiting.

I would also not wait on this. If it is IBD at least you can catch it early. I too just had to rush my son to the GI. He was vomiting, stomach pains, lost 13 lbs in a week. He was away at school in a third world country no less. During a routine test for parasites they found blood in his stool and was put on the next plane home. I took him directly to the ER and from there they got me in to see my GI whom immediately did a scope. He has inflamation-mild-8 inches up already. Plus he is anemic. This is all in a weeks time with no visiable signs of blood. Hopefully he will be able to get into a remission fast without the toxic drugs. I know first hand what can happen if you wait. I am also sick over this but it is what it is. I really hope that it is something else for your daughter.

Probably your daughter should start with an O & P test of stool-- because those can cause bleeding. Did she eat any canteloupe in recent weeks? The news has been reporting listeria infections from melons grown in Colorado & shipped to other states after the end of July. Articles say that listeria symptoms may not show for several weeks after ingestion. I hope she has nothing worse than a hemmie, but it's best to check with the doctor ASAP considering that she inherited some of your genes. Thanks for your replies everyone. I will call our primary care doc to make an appt. It takes a while to get in to see her, from a couple of weeks to a month, earlier if it's an emergency. So I will try to get an appt as soon as possible but I will keep my eye out in the meantime to look for more problems with my girl. Our genetics stink! :(

I have always been worried about my daughter because she is so much like me genetically and physically it's scary! She also just recently developed a fast and hard hit case of my Raynaud's. Hers seem to strike faster with cold things than mine does (or perhaps I just lost some feeling in my fingers after dealing with it for years!).

Old Hat, we did have a cantaloupe a few months ago and I don't even think she ate any. I ate the majority of it and I seem to be doing okay (knock on wood!).

Oh, Old Hat - I just heard it on the news. Those tainted cantaloupe weren't shipped here to MI.

Sherry, so sorry to hear about your daughter's symptoms. I would be worried too, especially with the genetics involved.

Is there any way you could get her to see your GI instead of first going to the primary care doc?

I think she should be seen as soon as possible.

No, unfortunately since this is a new problem we have to see our primary first - I have a HMO and that is how they work. I have an appt with my GI on October 11th so if I can get her to see our primary and if she wants her to see a GI, I will gladly change my appt with my GI so he can see her instead.

I am sorry you're dealing with this Sherry. I hope more than anything that she avoids the UC gene. I would probably take her in but it may be premature. Does she have pain with BM? I get blood often from my fissure but it's painful. A stool test is never a bad idea with blood, maybe it is something bacterial if she has D on and off. I get bleeding in he bowl at the end of my period but it's not bright red - it's only bright red at the start. I can't tell you how many times menstrual blood has freaked me out about UC...

She has a doctors appt with our primary on Tuesday. I have to take her anyway for an ingrown toenail so I will have the doc check her over anyway.

As for pain with a bm, she's been telling me her gut hurts - crampy like lower down (so I thought female issues) but she also has been having stomach pain and feeling nauseous. She hasn't told me if it hurts when she goes tho.

Did she eat something that was red in color? Like maranaria sauce, or pizza, ketchup, etc.  My son had bright red poop in the toliet a few weeks ago and he showed me and my first thing was UC but then I remebered he just ate spaggetti.  He hasn't had it since. 

I hope she doesn't have UC.  This is my biggest fear.  That I will pass this stupid diesese on to one of my kids. Ugh!!! I will keep her and you in my prayers and keep us posted.  I wish you guys the best.

Be sure and get the doctor to run some blood work, especially ESR, CRP and CBC. When I was at this stage with my daughter, those result gave us big clues that something was wrong without being as invasive as a scope. Her's were all pointing to problems so she had to have scopes.

She had had blood/mucus on and off for years, but never really D which is what threw us all off, even my son's Ped GI when I mentioned it to her.

I sure hope it ends up being nothing major!!

As far as I know, she didn't eat anything red or that could cause that. I even asked her and she said no Mom, this was blood.

Yeah, I'd lean towards the probability of UC, and call the doc for her to be in based on serious concern rather than just a general enquiry.

Can you not get her in to your GI? I guess she'd have to be referred anyway.

Didn't realise she's following so closely in your footsteps. Curious if she recently quit smoking?

If by chance I do have to take her to a GI, you bet it will be with mine. I like mine :)

As for smoking....I don't know?? She's 16...a typical secretive teen...however, she does not smell like smoke when she comes home. I know she did last year because she would stink of it, but it's been at least a year since I smelled it on her.

Good that you managed to schedule her with the PCP next week. We'll all keep our fingers crossed that she only has some temporary problem. How long did she take the antibiotics for acne? I'm so worried that antibiotics & b/c pills are causing a lot of people to develop UC ... One never used to hear of women falling ill with UC during pregnancy or postpartum! / Old Hat (30 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)
